Prism and DeLuxe
Hello,
I recently got a Prism and would like to use that instead of my deLuxe. Because I want to avoid the hassle of having to uninstall and reinstall software, I wondered if I could simply use the Backup springboard module: make a backup from the deLuxe, insert the module to the Prism and overwrite the Prism with these backup files..
According to Handspring customer services this should work without major problems, though some third party applications could crash...Still I wonder if some standard applications, e.g. City Time or Datebook+ use other/newer versions on the Prism than the deLuxe and therefore I would limit myself when installing the older versions from my deLuxe? Besides the standard software I use third party applications, like Quickoffice 5.6, SplashPhoto, CurrencyX, TomeRaider and AvantGo 3.3 (the newer version refused to install due to a known bug in older Palm OS)
Does anyone know of any major differences between the standard software and versions on the deLuxe and the Prism?
Also, if anybody knows more tips or have similar experiences with upgrading from a deLuxe to the Prism I would appreciate any hints.
Thanks a lot.
On the Deluxe, I would suggest a WarmReset. Hold the UP Button and press and release the Reset Button. Wait a second and release the UP button. This will bring the Palm up in a type of SAFE MODE.
This mode does not load any Hacks or System Extensions. This will allow you to enter in and delete the Handspring Extensions. Once deleted, you need to perform a SoftReset to get back to normal. Simply hit the reset button for that.
You should then be fine to backup the Deluxe to the Backup Module and install it onto the Prism.
As for CityTime and DateBook+, both applications are built into ROM. When you backup data to the BackupModule these applications do not get backed up. Their DB's get backed up, so any changes you have made will be installed, but the application itself is in ROM. This means you cannot alter these applications on your new Prism, so do not worry about them.
Your third party applications should be okay.
Before you do all of this, you might try simply HotSyncing your Prism. Choose the UserName of the Deluxe and let it go.
You will probably find everything restored in this manner. When I went from a Deluxe to a Prism, that is how I did it.
Then, when I went from my Prism to my CLIE, it worked again.

Make sure you install the latest Prism updater from Handspring before you load any third party software. Some of it will cause fatal errors otherwise.
Otherwise, I did nto have any problems switching over using the PIBackUp on a MemPlug as my 'back-up module'.

RE: Deluxe and Prism
Hello,
Thanks for the useful hints and tips. It almost sounds too easy to believe....Since I'm cautious with the reset button, I think I will try the Hotsync first..When I do a hotsync I'll probably have to reset the customs settings to "Desktop overwrites handheld"? I know, it may sound stupid, but I don't wanna loose any data....
I also heard about stories that Palm OS patches may cause crashes on the Prism. I once installed the patch that upgraded the Palm OS on the Dlx to version 3.1H3M. It seems that when you use the Backup module to transfer stuff to another PDA (eg the Prism) it crashes....
Oh well, I think I just have to take a deep breath and jump.....
Just Sync it!
Just did it a couple of weeks ago to a new Visor Pro. No problems encountered. You may have to beam one or two apps off your old one although I did not.
When I install apps I always copy/unzip them to my backup folder and then use the install tool to point there. It guarantees all of your apps are available if you need to hard reset.

DeLuxe to Prism
Hi,
Okay, HoySync seems the way to go.....
However, before I start, please check/advise me on this:
1. Does a Hotsync also copies third party applications? Eg. Quickword, Tomeraider, AvantGo+settings and if so, should I reset the HotSync settings to "Desktop overwrites handheld" for once? Does this enable full access to the Palm/Backup folder on the desktop PC?
2. About the possible problems with the Palm OS 3.1 patch. I noticed a file HsExt_1_0_3M in the Palm/Backup folder on my desktop. I think this is the PRC file that updates the OS on the DeLuxe to Palm OS 3.1H3M and seems to cause a crash when Hotsyncing to another handheld with another Palm OS. Is it better to remove this file before performing a Hotsync to the Prism?
Sorry for being so insecure about this. However I'm getting nightmares to loose stuff or screw up the new Prism.
Thanks in advance!
You don't have to.
Just do a hard reset on the device you want to "move" into before you sync... It will ask you to select who and.....
only goodness can result!!!
If you are missing any apps after that you should just have to reinstall them. PalmOS is very good with saving PDB's.
Have fun.
