-- When and how often to Synch? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2154)
Ok, new user here, watch out for the dumb questions...here they come...
I have a question regarding the philosophy of when and how often to synch. I got my visor two days ago and I've been giddy with joy playing around with all the features (yes, it's a personal organizer, but it's *so* much more!)
As a result, I find that I am running HotSynch a couple of times a day, to load up a new e-text that I downloaded, or try out a new program, etc. I'm sure that the frequency will shorten once I settle down and start using the visor in the regular course of affairs.
But my question(s) are these: Is there a philosophy or otherwise guideline which sets out the best frequency as to when to synch (one a day/once a week, etc?) or is it pretty much left to the user, do it on as as needed basis, etc.?
I installed the Palm OS calendar, since I don't use M$-Outlook on my machine (I use the Netscape Mail Client), and just used the default settings. I'm not sure about "backups". After I have done a HotSync, can I now consider the data on my Palm Calendar on my PC to be essentially a backed-up version of the data & apps on my visor? (so that if I lose data on my visor, I can back all of it up from my last HotSynch). This was my assumption, but I wanted to make sure I was right. If there is something *else* I need to be doing in order to back stuff up, somebody please let me know quick
And the last question, is there any potential risk of damaging the visor by Synching two or more times a day?
I'm sure I will eventually have a regular "synch-schedule", but right now there's just too much cool stuff to check out...
Oh, the one I ordered was a graphite deluxe model with extra serial cradle (my laptop which has the USB port is running RedHat Linux 6.0 right now), and the new stylus (which is on backorder) is on it's way from PDA Panache (I read all the horror stories of screens getting scratched and didn't want to take any chances).
And my visor? Yes, I love it. They'll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers to separate me from it
Thanks!
I sync at least twice a day during the work week, once at the office and once at home. I also synch when I add something important during the day so I won't risk forgetting at the end of the day.
I also try to synch once Saturday and Sunday if there are changes made at my home office schedule that I need transfered to the Visor.
I do this because my schedule changes rapidly and frequently and I am always adding to my contacts list. As easy as synching is with the Visor,I may be doing it more often and not even realize it
I do not think there is any risk in syncing very often other than the wear on the batteries perhaps.
I can't offer any answers to you other question but i hope this helps

Life is to short for boring food
I sync about 4 times a day. So, far no problems...

There's no danger from syncing too much. I sync at least 4 times a day during the work week as I have AvantGo installed and try to keep up on the latest news stories. As far as being backed up goes, yes your calendar is backed up and the databases that are created from the ROM based apps are backed up. This does not mean that every application or their databases are backed up. I'd recommend getting BackupBuddyNG if you are worried about everything being backed up. It's very good about that and if you ever have to do a hard reset, it will restore everything for you.

Thanks,

Yes, be sure to get Backup Buddy. It's a "must have" that works flawlessly.
I hotsync frequently and don't worry about it.
If your cradle starts to emit smoke then let it cool off a while.

I IR Sync at least four times per day. No problems.
The only caution that I recommend to new users is to only install one new application per day (if possible). The times when I install more than that always seem to be the times that I have conflicts with other programs and having just installed multiple programs makes it hard to troubleshoot.
Now, I am only concerned with Apps, once you've got AportisDoc or iSilo running fine, install all the e-texts you want. I've never had a conflict with one of those.
Thanks all to your valuable feedback. I'll get the backup programs installed so I'm sure that everything gets backed up when I synch.
