-- Not happy with ThinModem (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13851)

I bought a ThinModem today for an upcoming trip to Moab. I'll have a land line, but no wireless, so it was a must have.

The cable broke the first time I unplugged it. Yes, I followed the directions, but the top edge of the plug broke in a nice round shape. It still works, but I wonder about the life span of this product. PDASquare had similar problems with the cable on the + version.

VC mentioned the 56K update, so I downloaded that too. What VC failed to mention is that it deletes "Online" from Mark/Space, so that's another $29.95 to spend. They do include FileMover in exchange, but it's pointless since there is only 2k available on the flash.

The upgrade to Browse-It 2.0 was welcome, but the fact that 10 hours have gone by, and I still haven't received an unlock code from CardAccess is aggravating.

So far, I am extremely disappointed with Springboard modules. My Casio E-105 has a 56k modem that I bought 2 years ago for $95, it is CompactFlash size format, and plastic and steel, and is much more durable than the ThinModem. I also have a CF Ethernet adapter which also cost about $100.

Why are we all getting shafting on such overpriced, low quality hardware for the Visor ? Springboard seems like a huge step backward in time.

Cool

That's a pretty broad statement, considering you've only mentioned one particular module. I bought the Xircom 56 Globalaccess precisely because I've never trusted dongles, and I couldn't be happier with it. Ditto with my VisorPhone.

I have been very happy with my ThinModem Plus. It has worked very well for me. In addition, when I have contacted CardAccess, they have been very helpful and responded rapidly (usually not on the weekend though). They also frequently monitor these discussions so you should have a response from them Monday if things go as they usually seem to.

I have owned the original Thinmodem since November and I have had no problems with it at all. I did have some complaints with the original software (Browse-It and MultiMail), but the modem has been flawless. I downloaded the 56K code update and now love it even more. It did take some time for me to receive my code for Browse-It though. I believe they were having some server problems that have since been resolved. I should think that you will receive it anytime.

cable broke on my TM+....but Customer support was VERY helpful and patient. I got a replacement with in a few days of sending mine back. I think you should contact them if you have time. I haven't had a problem since replacing it. As for the springboard as a step back? I think just the opposite...it's a GREAT leap forward in the industry.
