Here's the scenerio, can someone help?
Currently my VDX has a password assigned (even though I don't remember assigning one). When I attempt to use the 'Forgotten Password' option and try to delete the assigned password I get this message,

DataMgr.c, Line:2824, Err
Removing Secret Records

Then I have to reset my Visor. It never allows me to assign a new password. I do not have any hacks, overclocking apps, or other software mods running.

This is a unit that was sent to me to replace my Visor with a cracked screen. I have had no other problems with it at all.

When giving advice, please talk slowly and use exaggerated arm and hand movements to help me understand, I'm tech-functional, not tech-literate.

Thanks!
BobbyMike

Is there really no-one that can help me with this? I want to be able to protect some lists from my seven year old (whom I let play games and such on my Visor). I hate to have to deny him the use of it 'cause I encourage the use of my tech stuff with him (with in reason).
Thanks,
BobbyMike

Did you try a full backup, hard-reset, and restore?

Before you try the Hard-Reset route, check these out. On doing a quick scan of Palm-Gear I found the following program that claim to allow one to delete the Palm password:

If you do go the Hard-Reset route, before doing so, make sure you have a good back up. Use Backup-Buddy or a similar program. (If not, minimally updated to the latest HotSync manager (v3.1.0H for MS Windows), which has an improved backup conduit.) Then after a fresh HotSync and the Hard-Reset, but before you HotSync again, do the following: Check your Backup directory; under windows usually C:\Palm\<YourHotSyncName>\Backup , but sometime C:\Program Files\Palm\<YourHotSyncName>\Backup . Where <YourHotSyncName> is something like the HotSync name your use on your Palm Device, usually shorten in some manner. My HotSync name, "Mark Potter" gets shortened to "potterm". Anyways, in the backup directory, check for the existence of a file "Unsaved_Preferences.PRC". If it does, it might not, move it out of the backup directory before you do the restoring HotSync. Why? Because the encrypted password is stored in one of the records in this file.

Thanks to both of you!
Mark, I used No Security and it worked like a charm. I appreciate the effort you took. If you ever make it out to Austerlitz, NY you have your choice of fresh eggs (from free range chickens) or a handblown glass (also free range)!
Either one of those, or you can stay for lunch and play Legos with me and my sons (would you believe, also free range?!)
Thanks again,
Michael Walters

Talking I like eggs too.

...so here's my suggestion. Instead of the password or private protection scheme, try out KidsPilot:

quote:
Application Description
KidsPilot is an application launcher that allows you to configure which applications can be used for up to fifteen "kids". This is useful when you want to let your child play a Pilot game, but are afraid to because he/she may wind up erasing yesterday's meeting minutes, or an important client's phone number. KidsPilot does not replace the application launcher, it runs just like any other application except that the person you give your Pilot to will not be able to return to the Launcher. They can only be able to run the programs you choose through Parental Controls. KidsPilot uses the password set in the Security application to insure that only you can change the configurations. When you get your Pilot back, return to the Parental Controls screen, and then you can tap the Applications button to return to "normal" mode. KidsPilot works with all OS versions, and has the same look and feel as the Palm III Launcher (except category groupings)
