Will someone please tell me why there is no combo Springboard which has a CF adapter AND 16 MB Flash Module? Is it technically not possible?
Currently I have an 8MB Flash Module and need more memory but my on-board 8MB only has 1MB left. It is filled with files I always need where they are -- can't be run from the flash module. How in heck do I fill up the 16MB Flash Module? Hotsync and move 1 MB at a time? OK, I can move most of the files to the 16 MB and then hotsync 7MB or so at a time, then move the files back. That is still a lot of work! Is there a better way?
A combo module would enable me to simply copy files to a CF using my workstation, put the CF in the module and then move the files to to the Flash portion.
My memory Choice
I bought the Innopocket version. It took a week from the time I placed my order until they shipped it. When they did ship it, it came overnight from Hong Kong via UPS for FREE. When I read the review comparing the two modules, I felt like the reviewer was trying to be diplomatic, but here is how it reads to me. "The Innopocket CF adapter is sturdier, cheaper and more convenient. The Matchbook adapter make the card stick out a little, is hard to remove from the Springboard slot, is flimsier and harder to line up the edge of the card, and more expensive once you go to the Kopsis site and download the software (that comes in a mini-CDROM from Innopocket), BUT it does a better job at withstanding being bent in half with pliers and being run over by a car."
I had an extra 8MB card lying around that now holds 3 medical texts, two county maps for Mapopolis, several games, several instruction manuals for other pieces of software and a few medical databases. The largest textbook takes a little over a minute to transfer over (just over 2 Megs) but most everything else goes pretty quickly. I'll eventually splurge for at least a 32MB card but this is so much better than what I had before. I can't see why anyone would buy a plain Jane Palm IIIxe.
I missed something earlier. How can you upgrade the Prism to 16MB of internal RAM?
Rest assured that InnoGear (reps) monitor this board. I was told last month that their #1 priority now is getting the MiniJam to run apps from the MMC memory. Hopefully, it will be out soon. If not, I plan to sell mine.

Download TealMovie, try it out, make sure you get a clip with sound.. it's not superfantastic but it's more than sufficient. You'll see what the palm sound can do despite how deficient it is.. Reminds me of the when folks started to put sound on IBM PC's years ago just using the built in speaker (i.e. no sound card).. It won't blow you away but its better than no sound. At least if I don't want to hear it, you can turn it off.
If you wanted high quality sound that you would expect from a pc of today's standards, then yes you would need a chip. Teal movie sound is a bit raspy, but good for spoken dialog, music is so-so, depends..
I think a "sound blaster" spingboard is a good idea, however I think Handspring would have to be the one that would have to come up with it, or set a defacto standard so to speak.. Other wise you would have potentially dozens of different hardware solutions and any program that attempted to use the sound springboard would have to contain extra code to support all those different sound springboards, this of course will make programs all that much larger.. or you would have to have different versions of programs each compiled to support a specific sound chip (not a good thing).

.snip.
MemPlug for me!
I'll be getting the MemPlug when it comes out. I was wavering, but I just got a Sony VIAO desktop and it takes, smartmedia, mem stick, or firewire. So it sounds like MemPlugs the one to go with.
Don't flame me, but is anyone concerned with the fact that smartmedia "ONLY" goes to 64 meg?
Just wondering.

I can't think of anything that would take up more than 63MB of space for one file.
I've seen 128MB advertised as available. Don't know the price. Local electronics store is selling 64MB for $70.00 USD. I'm off to get one. MemPlug is great!
The device has to support the 128mb format, unlike compact flash, the controller circuits are in the gizmo and not on the storage media.. Case in point, my Olympus digital camera probably won't be able to use 128mb smart media cards, but you can upgrade the memplug via software updates, so there is good chance it could.

I'm very happy with my MatchBook Adapter. It has performed exactly as advertised without a glitch of any sort, right from the very start. Now I'm waiting for the dust to settle with JackBack so I can take care of my backup requirements as well.

God bless the USA! The country I love, and will support at all costs.
Just saw a flyer, BJ's Wholesale Club is selling 64Mb SmartMedia card for $89.99, 32mb $49.99 (for comparison 64mb CF is $99)
Don't buy em'all up, save a 64mb card for me!

CF vs SmartMedia
I'm a memplug man. I was without my Visor data for **FOUR** days, so built-in backup is a must.
I read a post about digital cameras that a CF card is just Smart Media with a memory controller. This controller can be a transfer speed bottleneck which Smart Media won't have.
As for the 64MB limit, the contact points on smartmedia are all the same so it should be as easy as a MemPlug flashrom update to do 128MB+.
I also saw that a post that CF may not last for as many write cycles as SmartMedia. Can anybody confirm this?
