-- What is the benefit to Yadayada or Omnisky? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9063)

According to the bloke I spoke to at Novatel, you can just buy the module from them, buy the service from AT&T or verizon, and start using the wireless IP connectivity. You don't need any of the extra software from Omnisky or Yadayada, and while you pay full price for the modem the monthly carges are lower if you go direct.

If this is in fact the case, what is the point of going with Omnisky or Yadayada, unless you specifically want their rebadged versions of the software? If the cost is an issue, use a credit card that lets you defer payments (there's lots of cards that do that this time of the year) and spread the initial purchase price out that way. Seems like a win-win solution to me.

What's the catch?

Omnisky and YadaYada are both for nationwide roaming (ie. you're paying 39.95/mo and allows you to use the service anywhere in the USA, whether you're roaming on AT&T or Verizon territory, etc.)

If you look at the prices for AT&T and Verizon, The prices are low only if you stay within their (small) network footprint. And the monthly fees grow pretty rapidly depending on the type of service you're looking for. You're also tied to 1yr contracts. Roaming is just plain expensive.

If you're not a big roamer, I would say that Verizon offers the best deal. AT&T wireless seems awfully expensive when you try to stack the services up.
