-- Cf Lan Card Adapter (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13727)

Posted by Azdeadwood on 04-04-2001 03:41 PM:

I have a CF LAN Card (& a CF Modem Card) that works on my iPAQ 3630 but can't run with any of the CF Springboards.
If someone would develop it, the correct CF Springboard would open up the Visor to even greater possibilites.
It would enable the user to have the Wired LAN card many of us want. Since it would operate in real time, it would also convert the CF card into true memory expansion.
This would be the module of the future! Can anyone do it?

A better question would be whether it was worth anyone's time and money? Power consumption and drivers would probably be the biggest hurdles to getting it done.

Step 1: Get the company that makes your CF LAN card to release the source code to their driver software.

Step 2: Find at least 20,000 other Visor owners with the exact same CF card that you can guarantee would spend another $75 to be able to use it in their Visor.

The harsh reality is that developing a any Springboard module is very expensive. And unless someone can sell enough of them to recover their development investment, they just aren't going to do it.

I don't see how you draw the conclusion that supporting CF+ cards would allow CF storage cards to be used as directly accesible memory? The inability to use CF as expansion memory has nothing to do with "real-time", it's all about the fact that the CF card won't let the Visor's CPU see the flash memory directly. This is totally a limitation of CF cards and has nothing to do with the adapter.
