I guess this'd be a way to go if they're not too far along in their own "thin, color" model (Razor?).
But if they're alreadly like, 3/4 of the way there, I'm not sure it'd be the thing to do. Tho it could head Sony off at the pass quite a bit.
Sad for Palm though ... borders on unbelievable, if you look at from 6 mo. ago....

Merger More likely

I think a merger is more likely than an outright buyout. I would not be surprised if Palm and Handspring become one company in the Future.

Well, Handspring would not buy Palm. However, the Mac users pipe dream: I think Apple may try again to buy Palm or Handspring sometime in the future. (It sure as hell wouldn't be a bad thing!) Unless Handspring goes ahead and catches up to Palm's price cuts, and updates their product line, they may soon find themselves in a similar situation as Palm. And if Handspring was to EVER be purchased, it wouldn't surprise me at ALL if Apple snatched em up.

uhuh.. If Apple bought Palm.. Would that men that they cut all licensing deals, and make the Palm OS theirs ONLY, like the Macintosh OS?!?!?!?! noooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Apple wouldn't do that to the Palm OS! I'd love to see Apple just buy the hardware division though, and perhaps add on some "newtonx" capabilities along with the Palm OS. Make Palm an OS-only company.

Then again, after reading a few articles on Cnet and VC, It would not surprise me if Handspring helped save Palm. But I predict in about a week Jeff Hawkins / Dubinsky will soon release a formal statement announcing that they'll let Palm die off.

My biggest concern is the wireless access on my VII series!

I dunno, does anyone know WHAT Palm models are not selling?

I find all the reactions all over the net to the news about Palm somewhat confusing. I have thought this event was inevitable since the moment Handspring was formed. It has always been my impression that all the creative energy behind Palm left and went to Handspring anyway.

Jeff Hawking has been quoted a few times saying that he never would have formed Handspring, had 3Com told him they were going to spin Palm off into its own company, and I think all we are seeing now is the beginning of the rise of the "new Palm" or "new Handspring."

It has always been my understanding that Hawking was guaranteed a license to Palm OS, and the ability to develop it further, as part of his agreement upon leaving Palm, so I don't really see any danger of any company (even MS or Apple) buying Palm, and then revoking Handspring's license.

I think the most likely scenario is probably that Palm will just end up once more under Hawking's control, and either Handspring will become Palm again, or the Palm brand will be replaced entirely with Handspring. Worst case scenario, Palm goes belly up, and Handspring continues on with the HandspringOS, which happens to be 100% PalmOS compatible. Either way, I'll bet that next years top PDA will run a flavor of PalmOS, and have a Springboard slot.

I can not understand for the life of me why anyone would think that the people responsible for the original PalmPilot would just roll over and accept WinCE as an OS, as opposed to their own creation.

I agree with you 100%! Well said!

Of course, I think Palm's troubles will be minimal in July, when the M500 series is mass distributed.

But I doubt Hawkins would simply sit there and let Palm suffer!
