Only Edge user with no problems?
Have dropped it twice now (about a feet), and these past few days, it's been working fine in sub-zero centigrade temperature. The LCD does fade a but when it's really cold (up the contrast and it's ok). Also the metal cover gets cold VERY quickly, so after using it for a few minutes and closing it, can be quite unpleasant.
No cracks, a bit of tarnish on the buttons, no unreliability problems with any part of the hardware (including using springboard modules).
I wonder how many Edges in total are really problematic, I mean including sales to people who would probably never visit VisorCentral and just use the Edge as it shipped out of the box.
A salesmen selling the Edge here in Seoul also said that he likes it and that he hasn't heard of any problems from customers. Hmm..
I'll check what people are saying in Japan next week. Anybody here with and Edge living outside of the US/Canada that has problems with it?

My dear Friend "Kaeru",
You have now jinxed yourself.
I am on my second edge and waiting for a new problem. Waiting.
The first edge, the bottom holder of the stylus fell off. The screw came loose and would screw back in?
I had this one two months and i got hte tarnish going on.
Just waiting for a problem.

Holy!!! A good one slipped through!! I'd send it back to Handspring. There's something wrong with it.
Kaeru,
Except for the small cracks around the screws, I am not having any problems either. No digitizer issues, no fatal exceptions, no loose parts. My biggest beef with the cracks on my Edge is that its only a month old.
I think the people on this board represent only a small portion of the Edge users. A lot of people with defective units end up on boards like these because they look on the web for any resource they can find to help with them with their particular problem. I also think that there are a lot of Visor owners who don't even realize that HS offers replacements while you are still under the manufacturer's warranty. Also keep in mind that you always hear about the bad things, but never about the good. If I was your average PDA user I know I wouldn't go on the web looking for some place to tell people how great my PDA is working. Why? Because it is expected to work without problems.
Anyway, my point is that I think there are more good Edges out there than we think. Or, maybe HS has improved the quality of the Edge. Or, maybe I am smoking crack (not really).
Perhaps you just haven't stumbled across it yet?
I got mine through the upgrade offer (that was, what, 3 months ago?), and I'm just finding out that either the sled or the sled connection on the edge is fubar. Of course, this also indicates how much I use Springboards.

All very good points, Toby. I always like it when you respond to one of my posts because I usually end up seeing things a bit differently. Regardless of how many good and/or bad units that are out there - Handspring needed to correct the problems that exist with the Edge a long time ago.
By the way, Toby, I requested my replacement on Monday and got it today. What's up with that? That certainly isn't right.
To the many people who have Edge replacements: do they have the painted dot by the serial number to indicate that it is a refurb (like the VDx had)? My replacement looks like a new unit, but I can't tell.

Okay, how about 50/50? I know that you got 6 piece-of-crap Edges, but probably all but the first one you had were refurbs. I don't think you can count them in the equation. Who knows what HS does with the replacement visors before we get them? On the other hand, however, everyone who has requested a replacement had a problem Edge to begin with.
I guess that I will just sit here and be a fence-sitter. I don't want to say that the Edge is a POS, but I can't say it's a great device, either.
Dick - is there any definite way to tell if a replacement is a refurb? After all, I think you should be the expert on that considering your history.

I don't. It usually precludes a 5 page debate.[...]
quote:Actually, I think that's the root issue here. The Edge _shouldn't_ be a POS, and if Handspring had some better quality control, it wouldn't have been. The reason that I think people get as upset about it as some do is because there was a motivating factor with the Edge (size, style, expansion, whatever) that they couldn't get identically elsewhere.
