I am considering delving into the world of rechargeable batteries as continually purchasing alkalines is growing tried. I'd like to know what you are using and what kind of performance you get from them and if one brand or type is better than another. Thanx!

I was just gonna ask the same question as I bought a recharger today . I will be using Ni-MH, I think. But I was wondering the same thing....what is everyone else using?

NiMH, of course.

You could spend a lifetime (or at the minimum, about a couple days) rating the pros and cons or every brand of NiMH out there. And to be honest, I doubt you would notice the differnce in performance. I suggest you just buy the highest mAh at the cheapest price from whoever comes into sight first . I bought some Radio Shack NiMHs becuase I didn't want to wait a week to have some NiMHs shipped to me. I'm very happy with them. I typically get about a couple weeks per set, sometimes a lot more or a lot less. But get 2 pairs, so you can swap them (one pair charges, while you use the other).

Radio Shack NiMH are a wimpy 500mA.

I've heard good things about NexCell batteries, at 650mA.

I got mine at http://www.nimhbattery.com/ too. But beware, NiMH batteries loose their charge over a period of time...even if not in use. I don't think rechargeable Alkalines have this problem, but Alkalines can't be recharged as often.

I use one set of NiMH and one set of normal Alkalines. I use the NiMHs until they are almost empty, then switch in the Alkalines while till I charge up the NiMHs. BTW, they charge up pretty quickly.

Got my Energizer ACCU NiMH at Walmart. They have chargers too.

I used to use rechargables for my cameras, walkman and the like and found that they do hold their charge well for a while. When they reach a certain point, though, the batteries die very quickly and you need to recharge them. As time goes on you'll find that they spend more time in the recharger than they do in your visor. If you do want to get rechargables I recommend you check out Consumer Reports. They have done reviews on batteries in the last year or so.

I just started using the Rayovac Renewal - alkaline rechargables. So far, after two recharges, they work great! Much cheaper in the long run, and I have not noticed any performance issues at all. Plus, you are sticking to the alkaline recommendation from Handspring...

I have been using Rayovac Renewals for the past year, in my Palm III and now in my Vdx. I've found them to be great overall. They seem to hold a charge really well and also are able to be recharged around 100 times, which makes them very cheap.

Also, if you watch eBay you may be able to buy a bunch of them very cheap, which is what I did.

Thomas-distributing is a great place to get batteries and chargers. I just received my AAA order yesterday. They are FAST with shipping and their prices and service are great too. I was missing 2 of the 8 AAA's I ordered and e-mailed them about it. They called me today to apologize and are shipping me the 2 batteries.
Get the MAHA C204F charger too, it's the most popular charger and VERY well known by all who use it.

Avoid Panasonic brand rechargables like the plague. They wear out MUCH too fast, even for rechargables.

My Radio Shack NiMH have been working fine for me. I also have a Radio Shack quick recharger that recharges them in like 2 hours.

I'd like to thank everyone for their assistance. I decided to go with the Rayovac Renewal system. I used the AA's before years ago and found them acceptable. (So I guess I'm biased.) I've already gotten almost 2 weeks use out of them using them fresh out of the pack. I hope for longer life after recharging. I found their price a major advantage over NiMH and NiCD especially considering those types' memory effect and/or fall off rate. The charger is designed to recharge all the above types so I can try others in the future if I wish.
