All,

Just got email from CardAccess that they are now taking orders for their modems (http://www.cardaccess-inc.com/order.php3). Cost 119 and is said to be shipping on 6/13/00.

Unhappy

Whoopee... a whopping $10 less than the handspring modem. I was hoping it would be something a little more competitive than that. Other than the v.90 capability, why would I buy a 3rd party springboard that costs almost as much?

I know, I know... I've read all of the reasonable responses to the "Why are springboards so damn expensive" threads... and most of them make sense. It doesn't make it any less frustrating, though.

Hmm, let us see:

Smaller. This modem appears to be the size of the Backup or Flash modules. One could thus leave it in the Visor and still use a standard case.
v.90 upgradeable, for those that want faster. However, they do not mention how much the upgrade will be, or when it would be available.
On Board applications: MultiMail Pro by Actual Software (list $59.95), Browse-it by Puma technologies (cannot find list, apparently a new product, announced 6/5/00), and Online by Mark/Space Software ($29.95).

However I still have a few questions:

Are the applications stored in ROM or Flash?
If Flash, how much Flash memory and do they provide a File Mover application?
Considering it's price, I would assume that if it does have flash, it has just enough to hold the on board applications.

>And with simple flash upgradeability, you'll be able to upgrade Thincom to V.90 speeds in
>the future.*
>*a small upgrade and handling fee may apply.

What do they mean by 'flash upgradeability'? Will they provide an application that will modify flash ROM on the module?

I think I'll wait until they have v.90 built-in...maybe by then Innogear will have released the six-pack, so we can compare the two.

It looks like they are not even offering a full version of MMPRO. From their FAQ:

>Q. MultiMail PRO says it is a demo version. How can I purchase a full one?
>A. Go to Actual Software's website at http://www.actualsoft.com/ where you can
>purchase a full version of MultiMail.
>Purchase will also entitle you to future updates, etc.

I personally would prefer they just provide a few MB of flash along w/ the FileMover app, so I can load the most recent versions of whatever my favorite e-mail/web/terminal programs are.

That would be nice, but I'm not sure how many 3rd party email programs are flash compatable-- I'd suspect they'd fall over a lot, since it seems inescapable that you need to write to a database with an email program.

I ordered one today. I was waiting for a Modem and this one looks like a good fit. I didn't really need all the functions of the 6 pack, and this is available now. (they say). I'll let you know what I think.

Question

I have prodigy. Can this thing dial into prodigy? How am I charged? Do I have to pay a monthly subscription for wireless access?

Thanks for the reply

Kinged,

If you are a prodigy claasic Mamber, I don't think you can connect with any PDA.

If you are a prodigy.net subscriber, you should be able to use it to connect with this or any other modem.

There shouldn't be any extra charge to connect this way, but check with prodigy.

I received an email from Palm Gear today (the 13th) saying they received my order which shipped (the 14th). How did they do that?

CardAccess has come through! They actually shipped their modem to me yesterday (the promise date) and I received it today.

The modem comes bundled with Browse-It from Puma Technology. Browse-It seems to be functional enought, but I still haven't gotten over the "Gee-Whiz" aspect of actually browsing the web with the Visor. Honestly, I don't think I'm going to be making the Visor my primary surfing platform, but it is nice knowing I can look something up when I'm on the road.

> Does it work with AOL Mail <
You'll need an AOL Mail Client... Hand Mail was capable of accessing AOL, but I belive it's been discontinued. I don't know if MultiMail supports AOLs protocol or not.

> does Browse It work with AT&T worldnet <
I'm not familiar with WorldNet... is it AT&T's ISP? It should work with WorldNet, because MultiMail's website includes WorldNet in the list of ISPs with configuration info.
