Time for an upgrade

Right now I have a VXD and I am going to get a Prism. I have a backup module but how do I get all my old programs and such from the old to the new?

Well designed (and most recently developed) apps have a backwards compatibilty with the OS. The New OS normally runs most Apps designed for the old(er) OS (3.1)

Make sure your apps are supported by Prism's version of Palm OS.

Do this..

1) Hotsync the Deluxe just one last time to back up your apps
2) Hard reset your Deluxe
3) 'Backup' (not restore) your blank Deluxe to the back up module to format (overwrite data on) the module for Prism use.

4) Look for your backup folder (under your Palm\<user> folder) on your desktop. Remove (cut and paste elsewhere on the drive, but don't delete) any apps that may cause problems with Palm OS 3.5*, or are known to be last supported by OS version 3.1*

5) Hotsync your Prism to the PIM (Palm Desktop?), selecting your username and clicking OK (assuming you have a new Prism that is without user name/hotsync ID number established)
*** To be on the safe side, make sure your conduits are NOT set to Handheld overwirtes desktop or you may lose your data ***

6) Backup Prism's data to the Backup module

This should work.. I haven't tried it (cross OS version.) I suggest you follow a Handspring approved method in their KnowledgeBase (currently at http://support.handspring.com/esupp...t/hsWelcome.jsp) or contact product support. That is failsafe. Good luck.

Place the Backup Module in your Prism and do a RESTORE. This will put all the information from your Deluxe onto your new Prism. Keep the information on your Deluxe just in case you have problems. I also would suggest you keep the Backup Module just like it is, in case everything else goes awry. While this is not likely, it is a good idea.

There are a few programs that are not compatible with OS3.5, but if you are not running anything obscure, you should be okay.

I had no trouble upgrading from a Deluxe to the Prism.

GSR13,

You know I thought I could do that but it sounded so simple I thought there would have to be a catch somewhere

Nope, no catch. Everything should work fine. That is one of the things that makes the Backup Module so great.

It is the most useful accessory I have bought for my Visor.

The Prism will not fit in the Visor/Visor Deluxe mold cradle.

Also be careful

Thanks for the heads up. So if I want to sync both at work and at home I guess I will have to purchase a second cradle
