I would ask PIDeveloper to confirm or deny this. I really would like to know who the "culprit" is. I've got one without memory on order, but if I don't make it into the April 30th shipment (or somewhere very close by), I'll cancel my order and just deal with a flash module until someone comes out with a decent product that's actually available.

PI and PalmGear, this is not no slowly becoming a public relations nightmare for you both, so I'd work together to get this straightened out.

Memory and Memplug is sent separately. PalmGear has received SM Card long ago.

We just sent 500 units Memplug to PalmGear on Apr24.

Thanks PiDeveloper

Thanks for the information PiDeveloper. I've always maintained it was PalmGear who dropped the ball.

Love to hear from them.. C'mon PalmGear, fess up...

So IMHO Palmgear lied to me. They said they were only sent memplugs with bundled memory. If they ship separately, then Palmgear just chose to fill orders with bundled memory first (to fill THEIR pockets more) rather than in the order they were received. Palmgear will NEVER get any more of my business after this. If it wasn't for the fact that I have already ordered AND RECEIVED my sm card and reader, I would have cancelled my order already.

Palmgear has some explaining to do. Now.

I was told by palmgear that PI doesn't buddle the memplug with the memory that they do... I had tried to see if I ordered a different bundle if it would be faster and that is when they told me no... that they bundle them there... sounds like it is palm gear screwing the people that ordered just the memplug and no memory

Arrow Competition

What PalmGear needs is some real competition. They have a sort of a Spribgboard Moduke monopoly. Amazon carries some modules, but PalmGear has the widest array of choices by far.

Methink Handspring should find a better partner.

I think that is EXACTLY what they are doing. They are giving priority to those orders that net them the most income, NOT the orders that were placed first. If you notice, PIDeveloper has been on here a lot responding to a lot of this stuff. I know of at least one or two other folks besides myself that have suggested TO Palmgear come here to respond. How many responses have you seen from Palmgear?

My point exactly.

I wll be contacting them on Monday, whether they actually ship mine out on Monday or not, and will not get off the phone until I talk to someone OTHER than a sales or customer service rep. I have been known to stick with it and refuse to shut up until I was actually speaking with the President/CEO of Packard Bell before. Palmgear is small beans comparatively speaking.

BTW, I am working on trying to get all of us two-day shipping upgrades... we'll see.... LOL

Lightbulb FYI

I spoke at length this morning with Tiffany Wall, the Shipping Supervisor for Palmgear. She stated that they did receive some Memplugs last week, but simply did not get enough to complete all backorders. I was just about to start questioning her about the whole "filling 'bundled orders' first" issue we have been discussing, when she asked if she could put me on hold. She came back and said that she found four Memplugs left in store from last week's shipment. She offered to charge my card and send one out to me today. Of course, I accepted. I got email after lunch saying my order would be shipped today. She was very polite and gracious. I had sent her email over the weekend suggesting we all get two-day shipping upgrades, so her extra effort may have been due to that - who knows.

Whether the orders were filled based on those with bundled memory first remains a mystery - she did not offer any information regarding that. Also it is a mystery why there would be four left "in store" that were not sent out to fill orders.

I am finally getting mine, though it still does not quell my anger at the whole situation - it is clear there was significant miscommunication somewhere between PI and Palmgear and the consumers, and Palmgear's order filling practices is still somewhat unclear.

Give it a try. My squeaky wheel got oiled. Maybe yours will too.

Can't imagine why they would "not get enough to fill all back-orders." Do they simply not know how to count? How difficult is it to see how many orders they have and to estimate how many more they will get in the near future. Sheesh!

PIDeveloper, were you able to ship out the number of units that they ordered from you last week or so? This really is a shame for you guys. People are ticked off at PalmGear and are cancelling orders and buying a different product. Personally, I'll hold out a little longer, but then ...

Posted by Anomaly on 05-01-2001 05:10 PM:

Well, it seems that most of you were early enough in the queue to have received your Memplugs. Having been late to the party, I have not. So I'll keep this thread alive

Now Palmgear doesn't even update the backorder information, as minimal as it is. Today's May 1st and say still list April 30th.

I just sent a scathing e-mail, asking about the bundled vs. non-bundled nonsense. Chances are that I will cancel my order today. I don't have the "patience" you all have had to wait a month.

I'll keep y'all posted, if not for Memplug information but on PalmGear's slight of hand.

Posted by enhanceyourlife on 05-01-2001 05:18 PM:

I ordered on April 6th and last I heard was later this week.

PI's April 26th shipment is probably the one we're waiting on.

The hold up may be because they are in U.S. customs..

It happened to me with an MP3/CD player.. took two months to finally clear U.S. customs from Canada..!!

Smile Got mine and question

I finally received my MemPlug yesterday! I had placed the order towards the end of March, so I was beginning to think it would never come... It was (almost) worth the long wait.

By the way, I don't have a digital cameral but I would like to use the PiViewer. Does anyone know if there is a way to transfer jpeg's to my Visor during a Hotsync, and would I then be able to view them with the MemPlug software?

Not entirely true. My order was placed on 4/4, and I have not received mine yet. I think that is true of many here. In fact, even though it was shipped yesterday, it would NOT have been had I not gotten on the phone with the Shipping Supervisor length yesterday, which led to her looking around and just happening to "find four extras that were left in stock" (the fact that these were not shipped to fill orders still amazes me). I sincerely believe Palmgear is doing some shady things with their orders (filling their pockets by filling bundled memory orders first - all the info I have received from Palmgear and PI suggests this). Like I have maintained earlier, if not for the fact that I had already ordered AND RECEIVED my sm card and reader, I would have cancelled my order too.

Good luck.

Esjro,

What I would do is purchase an SM Card reader. I just purchased the ZIO USB Smartmedia card reader for around $25. Pretty cheap, and it works great. Once installed, it works just like an extra drive on your computer. With a card inserted into the reader (which is tiny, BTW), you can just copy jpegs directly to the card in Windows Explorer (or whatever file manager app you use). It's just like copying files to a floppy or second hard drive. It can't get any easier than that. Then you can view the jpegs with PIViewer.

Now to PIDeveloper,

1) I have heard that PIViewer automatically reduces jpegs 8x. If you have megapixel jpegs, they can still be viewed "full screen" on the visor. However, if you just have 640x480 jpegs (a lot of mine are because they are just digital snapshots with my Intel webcam/digicam combo), then the images are actually reduced on the screen and are VERY SMALL. Is PI planning on updating their PIViewer software to allow people to set their own image reduction rate? Or for PI Viewer to automatically make images full screen, regardless of the resolution of the source image? It would be very annoying to have several "postage stamp sized" images I am trying to look at with PIViewer. If this cannot be altered or fixed, it will be very upsetting.

2) I think I have seen you state that you are in the software development end of the Memplug. Can you tell us how close PI is in developing software that will allow us to run apps directly off the SM cards? A friend of mine contacted PI directly after receiving his Memplug asking this question, and was told PI was "70% sure it would happen" but they could not promise anything. Can you give us any more information on this please?

Thanks.

1. The scale down is due to the processing power of DragonBall(The CPU of Palm). We are investigating whether full scale decode is possible.

2. We are working on it, but it is still in alpha stage. Can't promise anything at this moment.
What I can say is powerfull application need time to develop. And we want to release stable application for all Memplug-users.

The Saga Continues

After sending PalmGear an e-mail asking why the bundled are available at an exorbitant price and the unbundled are back-ordered (considering PalmGear isn't getting the Smartmedia from Memplug), and asking why they can't seem to figure out how to order product, and suggesting that I was going to cancel my order shortly, this is the measly response I received from Tiffany Wells:

"We are waiting to receive these from the manufacturer. They are located in Hong Kong and sometimes they have trouble getting it passed customs. We should be receiving them in sometime this week or next."

PIDeveloper, do you know whether Palmgear has placed an additional order that has been shipped (beyond the 500 that they got last week and shipped)?

If none of this is true, it truly ticks me off that Palmgear continues to lay the blame at Memplug's feet. I'd really like your product, but I don't think I want to do business with PalmGear anymore. (Maybe you should suggest to your salespeople that they actively pursue a relationship with Amazon.com).

Angry

They're waffling AGAIN!!

I ordered one with a 32MB card on 4/2 and haven't received it.

I fell for the bait & switch routine. "Well the module is on backorder but the ones with memory aren't, so..."

Even if they were on backorder, I probably still would have ordered one because at that time, the backorder date was only a few days off.
