Thumbs up Handspring Still Tickin'

Three days ago I ordered a Visor Neo refurb from the Handspring site. The site says there may be a delay due to limited supplies. Since my purchase is to give as a gift and there's no real time crunch, I thought I'd take my chances even if I had to wait a bit.

It is now three days later and the Smoke Neo is right here! $99 plus tax - shipping is free and it sure appears brand new. Not a scratch on it.

Bravo, Handspring!

And .. just checked the site. They've added Blue Neos and Visors Pros to the refurb. choices. Way to go!

Let the Handspring underground movement begin.
Oh, it did already.
Well, then may the Handspring underground movement flourish.

If their marketing approach is turning into selling "refurbs" that, from what I've seen, are as good as new, at very reasonable prices, that could be one of the most creative ways to sell and support products.

Whatever the Handspring approach, officially or unofficially, I certainly applaud this company.

Visor Pro Batteries?

I'd love to pick up a refurbed Visor Pro for $150. My biggest concern, however, is the rechargable batteries. I'd plan to keep the new unit at least 18 months, and don't want to be "in the market" again after half that time because the rechargables died and I could not get a replacement. At least with a Visor Platimun I get ALL the processing power and can use off-the-shelf NiMH batteries...

Exactly. Resist the temptation for anything but a Neo, Plat, or Deluxe.

The next time you are tempted, look at your Plat and smile with gratitude. You've already got one of the best. And, if the urge to spend strikes, get another Plat or Neo. (and a $29 flash module). You just cannot go wrong.

If you want a fancy, multi-purpose pda, there are plenty of them out there. But, consider it as an additional choice, not a replacement. Why mix apples with oranges? - especially when you can mix metaphors and say "I already have the cream of the crop".

Still Tickin'?

I went into Best Buy yesterday and couldn't find a single item made by Handspring. Are they on the way out?

Biggies=Glitz+Beat up Stock

We don't see Handspring because they are not part of the "Newer, Bigger, Better" show that is the way of the retailers and especially the big chains.

By the time inventory gets in the door, gets thrown around a little, and gets a speck of dust on it, it's old.

Not blaming retailers, that's just the way it is. They need a constant flow of new glitz to survive (on very little profit.)

On the other hand, why should Handspring go through all that when they are doing a great job with the refurbs (most of which are as good or better than new from a retailer)?

Let's face it, Handspring's days of being "hot sellers" are over. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. There's little profit, if any in that approach.

However, as long as they can keep "those in the know" stocked with the Visors they love and use, the best advertising is always free advertising - word of mouth recommendations.

I'm not ready to give up on Handspring by a long shot yet.
