-- Handspring updated palm desktop software!! to 3.1 (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12917)
I just wanted to tell everyone that I handspring updated the software, today as a matter of fact. Its 19megs so for those of you that don't have a cable or DSL good luck on the dl. I don't know that the improvements are, sill downloading.
I have cable modem and Im only getting 17kb/s slow server I guess. Ill try and get back and tell everyone what the improvements are. Bye for now.
Well as far as I can tell they have updated pocket mirror (a program that allows you to sync with Microsoft outlook) and the install program was different and I think easier to use. It looks like they palm desktop software its self has been updated but, I don't know much about it I don't use it, I sync with outlook. Maybe some one else will see some other changes I missed.
In looking at the "new" Palm Desktop 3.1 for Handspring Visors (recall there was 3.1 version in the fall of last year), this download now contains:
- Chapura's PocketMirror
- All of the Visor PDF User Guides (I'm reading the Edge user guide in another window
- An update to some key DLL and EXE files, most notably the HotSync manager is now at 3.1.1Hb (shows 3.1.0Hb in the "About" window)
- A newer InstallShield installer and script, with new Handspring "billboards".
- The default installation directory is now titled, "C:\Program Files\Handspring"
- At one point in the install, the installer asks you what Visor you have (ranging from Solo to Edge). I haven't been able to tell if a different set of files gets installed depending on what Visor model you choose-- the only file I know is dependent on this selection is the User's Guide.
Other than that, it's still the old Palm Desktop (nee-- not the 4.0 UI).
Am I missing something? I cannot find the upgrade to the new 3.1 Desktop. I found an update for the USB Registry on Handspring's site, but no desktop upgrades. Can you please help?
You have to click on Download the Installation Software (or just click here: http://www.handspring.com/support/t..._download.jhtml ). Have your serial number handy (it's under the battery cover on Deluxe), you need to write it in.

Yeh - looks like Chapura PocketMirror has an update and they made some changes to the HotSync Manager. The only difference that choosing a Visor model seems to make is which user guide is installed.
It automatically installs 3.1H3 on Visor Deluxes without requiring them to d/l an updater file from Handspring's website.
is it possibe to get that 3.1.H3 update for the visor and the 3.1.1.Hb hotsync without installing the desktop?
Many of us are already at palm desktop 4.0.
Thanks!
Lex
Too little too late
I've been on Desktop 4.0 since it came out on Palms site and love it! Just install it, then run the Handspring installer next and choose Hotsync conduit only. Syncs my VDX and my wifes Palm III perfectly on the same PC.

I found it fairly irritating that Handspring's web pages which authenticate the serial number of a Visor to permit
me to download the updated desktop software, now makes use of a web-tracking site 'stats.superstats.com'.
Even more irritating is that you can't get past the authentication page without sending all kinds of
information about your browsing computer to superstats.com.
I use a filtering proxy to disable this kind of tracking. Handspring apparently is telling me that I no longer can get
continued updates for my Visor without (surreptiously) sending information to marketing/tracking firms about my
browsing environment, and without any idea how that information is to be used.
Here's the URL that was requested after supplying my serial number to get the updated desktop software:
stats.superstats.com/b/ss/hspring/1/31/9fsi984526767147?r=http%3A//www.handspring.com/support/softwareup.jhtml&s=1600x1200&

g=http%3A//www.handspring.com/support/ts_soft_download.jhtml&a=Netscape%204.75&p=
It includes (you can examine the javascript for the page yourself) the total screen size of your computer, channel
number if you use an active desktop, operating system, java version and enabled status, whether you permit cookies or not,
what browser and version you use, and what plugins you
have installed for the browser. None of which are necessary to authenticate my access to product updates.
Disabling javascript (or filtering access to this URL) makes it impossible to download the update.
To end on a positive note, I received an Email monday from Xircom that they will be taking advance orders for the
springport 802.11b wireless ethernet module starting in April, for May shipment. Hopefully they'll be
able to hold to that schedule -- I've been waiting...

That information is not information you need to be concerned about keeping private.
As someone who's worked as a web developer it's information that's needed to know in order to improve web sites better and when the majority finally got around to upgrading their browsers so we can implement better features.
Read Handspring's Privacy Policy
You should read Handspring's Privacy policy at the bottom of their web page. It is not in the business of selling its users info. It is in the business of making life easier for its customers. The information you mentioned is not private IMO. of course..here is that word again..this is subjective.
One thing I was disappointed to find out is that this installer does not allow you to choose the hotsync only custom install. I was hoping to try out the new 4.0 desktop software and then use this new installer from Handspring, but doesn't look like it's possible.
I don't think that I'm going to be donwloading this new version of Handspring Palm desktop for the main reason that it looks like it doesn't update much at all. I think that they basically put this out so they could calm people for a while while they work out all of the bugs in their version of PD 4.0.
