VFS? And for those of us stuck with OS3.1?

By "VFS," I take it that means something that would allow direct operation (and hotsyncing?) of the CF files without having to transfer them to RAM (well, without ME having to manually transfer them to RAM). I wasn't sure from the other discussions whether this was something that could be done in software - presumably a new FAFileMover, or whatever - or whether it also needs hardware on the adapter - ie, existing CF adapters won't work. Any ideas?
I want more memory 2
I would like to thank the group for quite actively taking up the subject and speaking about it. I learned a bit - but not enough.
I still am lacking basic information - like a comparison between the CF card and the flash memory. Surely there is a difference, and if so - what is it.
Is the CF card and the software that we can get for it similar in function to the TGF-Pro (or whatever it is called). If there is another person out there who uses top heavy programs (like e-books and refences) or another physician - has any extension allowed you to access all the info. (aside: I say this as opposed to those people who use wireless internet, e-mail or gaming software as the predominant software)
What is the difference between the converter cartriges available? Is there a difference in function (every one seems to pay more attention to whether physically it fits as opposed to noting the function) between the Nixst (which claims to be the only one with the official status of "springboard cartidge) and the various others?
What kind of advances are in the future for this file moving and will we be able to take advantage of it?
I hope that this posting is less problematic or repetitive. I have searched for articles up and down the web and have yet to find a good bare bones practical answer to a lot of the questions I still have.
I thank you all in advance.

Here's a very basic overview. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong:
1) Flash Modules
--Accessible directly from the OS, runs directly from module
--wicked fast
--expensive
--comes in either 8 or 16 megs
--limitations: few. You can't run things that have to modify themselves. Check by trial & error, most apps work fine
--pluses: Lots. Fast, idiot proof, invisible.
--Made by Handspring, Hagiwara, Thinmodem, Innogear
2) SD Card
--Accessible indirectly, copies programs to RAM in order to run them. Can, however, read some files, like movies, docs, & pix directly off the card.
--Slow
--Cost is fair to middlin'
--Comes up to 128, I think
--Limitations: good luck getting the memplug module any time soon.
--pluses: VFS means widespread software support for reading files directly.
3) CF Card
--Accessible indirectly. You manually copy files into RAM in ordr to run them. Not Plug'n'Play, but you can read docs right off the card. Advances coming
--Fairly fast
--Pretty cheap
--Also pretty big, up to a gig if you get a powered adapter
--Limitations: No widespread software support until a VFS is implemented
--Pluses: available now, pretty cheap.
4) Memory upgrade
--Accessible directly. Literally changes your internal RAM to 16.
--FAST
--dunno the cost
--8 megs
--Limitations: void your warranty. a week or two w/out a visor
--Pluses: absolutely invisible, no thought necessary. Just more room.
...hope that helps.

Great review dietrichbohn !!!!!
I want more memory 3
Indeed, A fantastic review. Thank you.
Do you have any references to that information or experience. I have to say that the reviews that I read were not as complimentary about the flash modules. and this is one of the first times that I heard about the internal upgrade.
How prevalent is the internal upgrade?
Can we expect an autoCF type of program (theres another one for the CLIE but I forget its name) for these products (nixst, innogear etc)
lastly, have any of these devices been associated with a significant battery drain? I know that with with the TGFpro there has been reports given a certain operating system.
Again, thank you for the conciseness of the review.

The third reply in this thread referred to one company that does internal upgrades, www.stnecorp.com. I had them do a 2 to 8 meg upgrade. There is also http://www.palmpilotupgrade.com which seems to be used by most people. I had them do a 8 to 16 meg upgrade on my Platinum. You could start a poll to find out how many have upgraded but I would guess >20. This site also has comparisons. http://members.tripod.com/kyoutendo...mory_matrix.htm
