I am looking to buy a Visor. I will never have 8MB worth of addresses, appts, etc., so I think the 2MB version would work for me. My question is about all the add-ons that you can get. I'm wondering how much memory they take (average) and if I would realistically be hurting with the 2MB. I plan to store mostly address info, with minimal calendar info. The bottom line is that I do not want to spend the money for the Deluxe if I do not (reasonably) need the 8 MB. Suggestions are appreciated.

If you're only going to use the core apps like Address and Calendar and not load any third party apps, then 2mb should suffice. However, if you're like the rest of us , and want to load all kinds of useful programs or reference materials, then I suggest you go with a Deluxe with 8mb. The additional up-front expense is well worth it in the long run.

I have roughly 6mb loaded onto my Visor. Besides the core stuff, I use AvantGo, DateBk4, QuickSheet, and several reference documents and the associated readers that alone consume approximately 2mb.

It all boils down to how you envision using your Visor. Besides, only the Deluxe is available in the cool colors!

If you buy the 2mb Visor then I suggest never visiting places like PalmGear on the web, or even here for that matter because eventually you are bound to hear about an application that would be very useful to you and you'll find out you don't have room for it. Like Mark said, if you are confident that you won't want any third party soft, then you are good with the 2 megger. But if you are new to PDAs (I don't know if you are or not) then know that there are actually thousands of programs written for the PalmOS. Once you get your Visor and look at some of the programs you will be amazed what ones you will find useful.

My dictionary app alone takes up 2MB of my memory. This is unusually big for a Palm app from what I've seen but I find it very useful. Just one of many examples.

Well, I'm a 2-megger, and I regret it. Not that all is lost, because I will buy the 8-mb module in a few weeks (as soon as I dig out of my new car debt). However, I also thought that there was no way I could use up 8 mb to store stuff like addresses, appts, and to-do's.

I now have a few simple games, tide tables, drawing software (TealPaint & DiddleBug), various hacks, clocks, a wonderful conversion utility from Zingware (that I promise to pay for), FireViewer, checklist, etc. Get my drift. I also love downloading software and trying things out. Lots gets removed, but the good one's are wonderful.

My suggestion, seeing as you asked, is go the extra few bucks for the Visor Deluxe. Better to have too much space, than not enough. Actually, it really bothers me that they make a 2-megger in the first place. Maybe I wouldna bought it. Yeah, yeah....... blaming Handspring instead of myself (cheapskate that I am).

Definitely buy the 8MB Visor Deluxe. I have that and the 8MB Flash and currently run with over 13MB of programs and data on my Visor. I couldn't imagine having any less!

hmm...

I've gotta two megger which i cope with....if you really think your not going to need to space, have a tight budget and/or very very good 'visor' cleaner...itz all right...

it kinda sux that you have to constantly worry about it, but i'm a student so i dont' have much money to spend

it definitely serves my needs and i would be lost without it...

suckiest thing is the lack of colors...*sigh*

btw, can you dye this thing?!

For some people the extra cost of the Deluxe is a lot of money. If you're one of those people and you'll be satisfied with an electronic datebook and addressbook, go with the 2M. If you think you want to have any fun with the Visor, save up and get the Deluxe. Good luck

Having bought a 2 meg to save money, I found I filled it quickly with programs I down loaded including Avantgo and Vindigo. I was able to have it upgraded to 8 meg by STNEcorp.com for $90. I also got the 8 meg module and filled it with Mapopolis maps. John

If you go with just the basic Visor then never ever look at anything other than the core apps. You will have plenty of memory to replace a paper planner if that's your goal.

However, there are now more than 100,000 software developers for the Palm OS. This demand was not fueled by people being content to use their PDA with just the core apps.

I have used Palm type devices since they first came out in late 94 and can tell you that I've never been content with just 2MB and the first Palm Pilot only had 256K so .....

Remember that most of the software is shareware so try before you buy is a great way to "play" with stuff before laying down the cash. Lay down the cash for the xtra money and then go find some software that will make your experience with the Visor much more pleasurable than just a paper planner replacement.

I thank all of you very much for your replies. I believe I will get the Deluxe. This will be my first PDA, and I'm looking forward to it - nothing like an electronic gadget to play with. I currently have a Sharp electronic organizer and it serves its purpose, but I want something more flexibe and powerful. So what color do I go with???

I consider my self one of the rest of 'US' i load and try out tons and tons of apps but rarley keep more than 8 on the machine, My 2 meg visor is 66 or so % full and it woorks fine. So you realy don't need a 8 meg machine

My suggestion about Memory is: If you are getting a 3com palmPiolt then never waist your money on a 2 meg machine (for that mater never get anything execpt Handspring) but if you are getting a handspring then there is no real reason to get the 8 meg version unless you are realy intrested in using AvantGo extensively. The main things that take up large amounts of memory are: e-books, AvantGo channels and rarely used apps (but used enought that they need to stay on the palm). ebooks can easlily be stored on a Flass module or anyother module that has more than a 1.5 megs or more of flash space(espicaly if you use iSilo format). and thoes rarely used Apps can go on the module, that leaves AvantGo, If you use it extensively then yes you need an 8 meg machine, but if you have just one or two that you use then 2 megs will do for just about anything.

As I said before I own a 2 meg machine and I love it, I plan to keep it unless the USB port on the bottom of the new visors is the same (and thus my stowaway would be compatable), in which case I would upgrade to the Platnum mostly because of the faster chip and hopefully the case will be brushed steel.

Arm,

Go with the Graphite if you want to be slightly more conservative/professional. If you want to be the center of attention then chose any other color. Look at the pics regarding the Visor Phone and see how "clunky" the Springboard black module looks against the Orange Visor....to me it's ugly but to others it might be beautiful.

I must say this the color thing - I never thought that people would really go for it. But then, Henry Ford thought that the only color was black.

Pick your own poison because you'll get everyone like me telling you want they prefer.
