Total Recall

So what does everyone think of the CA "election" and the various "stars" who are running?

Cool

My money is on Gary "who you talkin' about Willis" Coleman!

I think Ahnald can take it on star power alone. Besides, I can imagine what would happen in a heated debate with Gary Coleman. Endless Terminator, Predator, and Commando quotes come to mind, hehe.

No heated debate amongst those two. Coleman has already stated that he's going to vote for Arnold.

marketing

I'm tripped out by Mary Carey, the porn"star". Her platform includes a "guns for porn" program much like the old "guns for money" programs a lot of cities adopted. She wants people to trade in their handguns for X-rated videos. Sounds like an ingeniously shrewd marketing ploy to me.

Dan.

Well, there are tons of war movies, but not nearly as many as porno movies. There are war books, but not as many as porno mags. I guess the one place where there's more war than sex is on the news. Imagine if Dan Rather reported on "Operation Enduring Orgasm" every night. He could even be on location and do interviews.

The world would be a different place.

Gives a new meaning to "imbedded reporting" huh?

Dan.

Porn = Love?

Try to explain that to your wife.

Sadly enough I think you've got it entirely backwards. When was the last time you saw/heard about a "War" shop that specialized in war movies, magazines, DVDs, "toys", etc.

War is more "mainstream", but it definitely isn't better represented in print or film (make that video).

When was the last time anyone got spammed by a "war" provider?

Unfortunately the unsolicited "mail" is lead and comes hurling at you at hundreds of miles an hour.

I hope you're not making a lesser-of-two-evils argument.

(a) I don't think he got it wrong. War is definitely better represented in the media. For instance, there are much more war related threads on Treocentral than porn related ones, to start off with. Also, the "war industry" is definitely by far bigger than the porn industry. I'm not saying porn should be better represented or promoted, though.

(b) even if it was opposite, why would that be "sad enough"? Some people seem to think it is worse for a child to see a naked person than to see a person being killed (people being killed seems to be normal on TV). I'm not saying children should see porn movies, though.

What media? News? Porn is a much larger indusrty than you acknowledge/know about. I was referring to entertainment. it is still the biggest producer of videos, magazines and websites.

War is inevitable. It is the natural response of humans to the threat of annilhilation by another group of humans.

Porn is not just seeing someone naked. It's the representation of sex as a commodity and it is extremely damaging to children.
Aggression is a normal facet of childrens psyche. Sexuality is not. You may think otherwise, but all of the evidence points otherwise.

I would much rather my child see "A Bridge Too Far" or "Blackhawk Down" than "Deep Throat" or "The Story of O".

Porn is not love, it's the opposite.

Are we just talking movies? Porn movies make MUCH more money than war movies. They usually rent for more and they are cheap as sin [tic] to make (vs. quality filming of expensive pyrotechnics, etc.). I'd also be willing to bet there are more pornos than war videos.

As a quick and unscientific survey, there seem to be more non-fiction books listing war in the subject than sex (www.sdln.net searching the catalogs of a few of the major town in SD). That may be due to a cost anonymity ratio when compared to the internet (net is fairly cheap and seems fairly private vs. cost of publication and having a library or book store see you check out/purchase your risque novel/mag/etc.). That may also be a purely SD thing. I'd be willing to be that sex sells more fiction books, however (harlequin doesn't sell many war books, to my knowledge).

As for my kid, I'd rather he 'stumble upon' the playboy website than watch the Daniel Pearl video on the net. Also, I'd rather he watch 'Forrest Gump' than 'Sally Takes it Where the Sun Don't Shine by the Carl, the Cable Repair Guy'. It's a question of severity.

hence the 'strange' in my statement...

When I read porn for guns I read a twisted version of 'make love not war'...
since 'making love' is a synonym for having sex it is not that far off.. But we all agree there is a big difference between porn and love...

Very well put! sometimes I get the feeling that in the US violence is OK but a naked (female) breast is a big no no...
While science recently proved that looking at breast lowers stress levels in men and improves the life expectancy...

'Making love' is not a synonym for 'having sex'. Even 50 Cent gets that subtlety.

A naked female breast is not porno. A naked female breast could be in a PG movie (Possibly even G, don't remember what Fantasia was rated, but those naked pixies were animated).

I understood what you were saying, I just wanted to differentiate between sex between a loving couple (making love) and porn. I think that too many people confuse freedom with license and go to far in permitting porn into their everyday life.

I don't want my children to grow up thinking casual sex is ok. AIDS, etc. would never have been a problem if people had been a little less casual with who they slept with.
