I'm new to the world of handhelds, and at the risk of sounding like the group skeptic, what could i possibly need with 8mb?!

I got my visor as a b-day pres. while i do really like to built in features (and the hearts game a client beamed me), i don't think that i've seen anything out there worth downloading. I got hackmaster and appman. frankly, i like the built in app launcher better (i find it's alot cleaner looking).
i tried treksounds (annoying), i don't really have time for games. i still have like 95% memory free. or more. isn't there anything really useful out there, or is it all fluff?

oh, i did get a hack called jot, which replaces grafitti, and is great, but otherwise, i must admit i'm a bit unimpressed.

Well, 8MB really is not very much. I plan on using mine for databases and I can eat 8MB for lunch. I hope that the Springboard with an additional 8MB is usable by the db programs (HanDBase) or I may have a problem. If not, I will have to juggle my data.

Check out AvantGo.com if you want to use up some memory. Also, check out www.memoware.com for books and other docs you can store for when you have that extra few minutes to read. "War and Peace" eats up about 1.6M...so there you go. Download that and a few more and before long, you will need even more memory. (Of course, you probably won't care 'cause you will be cross-eyed from trying to read that much on the little screen.)

Some folks have Bible software on theirs. Some do spreadsheets. Some do databases. It all depends on your needs. Think of the last time you needed information and did not have it. Think of the last time you needed to do a complex calculation and could not easily do it. Use that as the basis for your use plan. Chances are, someone out there had the same problem and figured a way to solve it.

You can't be serious. "Unimpressed"? Please go to palmgear.com and check out all the different programs, hacks, databases, etc and you will be impressed. Some of the programs I currently use on a regular basis:

Big Clock- for times when Date Book just won't do, four different alarms, two different timers, four different times, four different customizable alarms. For free!

Diddle- for when you just want to jot something in you own handwriting.

AvantGo- take the Web with you! Download news from Wall Street Journal, N.Y. Times plus you can pick your own sites to be put into your Visor.

iSilofree, AportisDoc, or Qed- Doc readers for books, reference, etc.

I know you said you don't have time for games but the ones I like are: Astroids-classic Atari 2600; Pacman- another classic whose name says it all; Galax- similar if not an exact duplicate of Galaga and Galaxian.

This list will continue to grow as I am just beginning-this is my first PalmOS unit. Get online, download some stuff, and be impressed!

I am glad that I didn't go with the standard 2MB. I've got the Blue Visor Deluxe and on my Thanksgiving trip back home, I had loaded about 3MB worth of data. This included the full text of "The Sign of Four" by Arthur Conan Doyle, web pages from 6 different sources in AvantGo, several short stories and the "lost chapters" of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I managed to use my Visor as a quite effective e-book during the flight. I have loaded several applications including CSpotRun (the freeware doc reader), AvantGo, Hackmaster and several different hacks including the Desktop Accessories, Brainforest Mobile, ImageViewerIII, LauncherIII, several games, and a few other programs.

I feel glad that I can have all these things loaded and still not approach the ceiling of 8MB. I would feel bad if I had to pick and choose what to install if I only had 2MB.
