Transferring data from Visor to m500

I have purchased an m500 and will need to transfer data to my new palm. Will I be able to hotsync the data from my current palm desktop (configured from my Edge) to the m500 without a problem, or will I need to reinstall all of the programs?

I sold my Edge on eBay and promised to ship it out tomorrow, so I will not have it to IR any information to the m500 (if that is even possible). Is this going to be a huge headache or a piece of cake?

Thanks!

You should be able to transfer the information from one to the other fairly cleanly, without reinstalling everything.

This instructions are thus written with the assumption that time is short.

  1. Check what version of the Hot sync manager you are using. Click on the Hot sync icon in the tool tray, and then click about. Version 3.1 or greater will be fine. If you are running an earlier version you need to update it from the version available on Handsprings web site first. (Opps, I'm assuming you are using a Windows desktop. I do not know what version you need if you use a Mac.)
  2. Get the program
    BackupAll
. Normally I would not recommend this, but since you are going to no longer have your original PalmOS device, I'm going this route.
  3. Install BackupAll and Hot sync your Edge.
  4. On your desktop, find the backup directory. This is usually C:\Palm\name\Backup where name is a shortened version of your Hot sync name. However it may be on a different drive, sometimes 'Palm' is 'Handspring', and sometimes it is off of the \Program Files\ directory.
  5. Rename the Backup directory to something like Backup.bak.
  6. On you Edge, run the Backup All program. Press the <All> button. This will set the backup bit on every file on your Edge.
  7. Hot sync again. This Hot sync will take a while for every file on your Edge is being copied to your desktop.
  8. On your desktop, find the backup directory again. This time rename it to something link Edge_Full_Backup.
  9. Rename the previous Backup directory from Backup.bak back to just Backup. You now have what is typically backed up in the Backup directory and everything (wither it should be backed up or not) in the Edge_Full_Backup directory. Thus if we find we are missing something, we can always go to this directory to get it, instead of using the actual device.
  10. Go in the Backup directory. Look for any file with a name like: HsExtensions_3_5_2_v__1_5.PRC. Delete these files. They are OS-Patches for Handspring Devices and do not apply to Palm Devices.
  11. Now install the Palm Desktop that came with your m500 overtop of the Handspring version of the Palm Desktop.
  12. Hot sync your m500. When it asks what use name to give to the device, select the name of your Edge. Everything that was originally flagged for Backup on your Edge has now been copied to your m500. This is ideally exactly what you want. However some programmers make mistakes on setting those backup bits, and therefore some program and data files may be found to be missing. If you find any such, you can install the files from the Edge_Full_Backup directory.
Best of Luck.

1. Set aside everything in my backup folder - in case the next step doesn't work.

2. Set backupall to save everything and, if successful, delete the crap from step one

3. Move everything from the backup folder to an undisclosed location.

4. If I'm feeling adventurous, move the information from the various PIM apps, remove Palm Desktop, and re-install with latest version from whichever company I happened to buy from. I don't bother very often, but did with the m505 to see if I could get avantgo working.

5. Sync the new device to only get the datebook/addressbook/todo list/memopad info installed.

6. Go through the backed-up information and install everything I want. If I'm not feeling adventurous, I'll also install some of the former system's preferences.

It's a lot easier/quicker than it sounds. It honestly takes about 5 minutes.
