Further Handpsring woes...
Interesting article in today's National Post up here in Canada about Handsprings real estate problems...

Wow, and I thought MY house payments hurt!
This is a good example of why so many companies have been fleeing California over the last decade or so- the costs of business are often killer themselves!
There is probably a nasty catch-22- I bet leases/purchases are down, so landlords are probably really, really reluctant to let people out of the agreements.

I happen to have visited friends in Los Angeles this past week (where, incidentally, my Treo worked just fine!). My friend John proudly showed me all the work being done to his home and commented that he had budgeted his rennovations at $130,000.00. My jaw dropped as I explained that my house in south Alabama which is roughly the same size cost about half that amount to buy. Come on folks...the weather there isn't THAT great - is it?
I'm now sitting in the midwest with sub zero wind chill. This past weekend it was 70 degrees and I was walking along the shore in Sandals in Southern California....
My wife says the answer is yes!

Cali isn't the only place with decent weather....geez
but it is one of the craziest real estate markets in the US.
I know that in Denver houses go for around 200/per sqft.
And that is crazy enough for me...I don't even want to see what California is like.
Toronto's no better...with average costs being approx. 275-300/sq. ft for a semi-detached home in a decent area....it does get cheaper but then you start 'settling' for other things that you may not want...

Try buying a house in New England.. I am still bleeding from those wounds.. New England has some of the highest housing costs in the country.. (although I think some parts of Calif are higher.. i.e. L.A. , SF.. ), it goes without saying there won't be any new electronic toys for a while..

I managed to live in the NY burbs for 3 years. The weather there certainly wasn't worth the prices. The weather down here on the gulf coast is generally similar to LA - without the astronomical prices. Granted, we don't have the shopping, the restaurants, the industry, or anything else either. On the bright side - other than record breaking cold snaps like we're having this week (and we still haven't seen snow here in 8 years!) - I can afford all the gadgets I want.

California is in an earthquake zone. Scientists have been predicting the big one to com3e for decades. I wouldn't want to live in Califronia much less to pay all that money for real estate. Its like buying a house built on sand.

Arizona? Gosh no! That's where my bridge is though.....
i live in california and i love it. i wouldnt dream of living anywhere else! the weather is great (i wear sandals year round and havent worn shoes in about a week). yeah, there are earthquakes, but they are actually sort of fun, as long as nobody is seriously injured. but yeah, the houses are freakishly expensive. its worth it, though.

It takes weather to build character, right guys? (Addressing the others of us who live in these miserable conditions for some ungodly reason rather than someplace where human beings can actually exist unprotected outdoors most of the time.) (Ooops- scratch that, I mean those of us living in places where WEATHER seperates the men from the boys!)
it was freezing this morning! i woke up and decided that i would wear pants to school instead of shorts. do you know what the temperature was? around 40. but there was also frost on our grass. over all it was quite cold!

Sydney has about the same climate as California minus all the crazyness
Only problem is everybody drives on the wrong side of the road...
House prices are pretty high in the Sydney metro area, but country NSW is dirt cheap...
If you have a lot of US$ it is cheap here though since the AUD is about half a USD....
