- Springboard Modules (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=10)
-- New user, considering memory options... (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13348)
Hi,
I just wanted to get some opinions about which sort of memory module I should buy. I'm a brand-new visor user; I just bought a visor deluxe.
I'm travelling to Russia in a few weeks, and I'll be there for 4 months, probably without the option to hot-sync. So I thought that it would be a really good idea to buy some extra memory. Now the question is: which type?
I was considering buying the mem-plug, but from what I understand, you can't run programs off of it. Is it a big inconvenience then to copy them onto the Visor?
Any feedback you might have is GREATLY appreciated!

Well, since my MemPlug is still back-ordered (Hey, at least I'm not bitter), I can't answer any questions about that. If you are going to be unable to Hotsync for a while, I would say that a Backup Module would be a good first consideration for you. $40 goes a long way towards peace of mind where your data in concerned. I know that the MemPlug comes with a Backup app, but I would read some of the experiences people on this board have had with them. I have had my Backup Springboard since Nov 1999 and I have had no problems whatsoever, even though I use it at least once a week, sometimes much more.
Aside from that, I have the 8MB Flash Springboard from Handspring, and it works great. As long as you remember you can't put PDBs that need to be updated there, you are fine. Mine is full of programs and e-books. I can only imagine the the 16MB module is more of the same.

MemPlug
I have a MemPlug, a backup module and an 8 mg module. I like the Memplug the best for backup and storage. I agree with Soul Raven though that backing up your data is the key thing anytime you are away from hotsync. If you travel and have the ability to take the backup module out and store it someplace, that would also be optimal just in case. Anyway good luck, sounds like a great trip.

Hmm...
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. Since I am brand new to the Visor, I don't know a lot about the springboard modules. So my question is this: Can't I just by the 16MB springboard and move my data into that, or are they two completely different things? (I am so overwhelmed by all of the different products available!)

Backup, backup, backup...
I have the earlier Handspring Backup Springboard and well as my new MemPlug with a new 64Meg. SmartMedia from NewEgg.com. Backup with both of them! I have well over 1000 addresses, contacts, and notes that I just would not like to loose. Especially not being able to hotsync to my work as well as my home computer.
A valuable combination - the Visor Deluxe and a MemPlug!
Enjoy,
Kurt
I forgot - A Targus Stowaway too!
In addition to the previous post a Targus Stowaway keyboard for the Visor Deluxe is indispensable when you don't have the privilege to have a good laptop computer with you all the time.
Yo,
Kurt
Come one! Come all! Because I have too much free time on my hands I've built a table displaying all the different memory options for users.
Check out the:
Kyoutendouchi Memory Matrix
I'm just hoping it can help some people (Don't hit your head on Tripod's stupid pop-up banner). If you have any changes I should make or suggestions be sure to tell me.

The problem with having the 16MB Flash module, and just making a copy of internal memory there is that, well, you would have two copies of everything. You would leave the module in, and the Visor would "see" both programs.
Also, I don't know (now I'll have to check) if you can copy your address book and appointments to the Flash module. That's the benefit of the Backup module: it copies EVERYTHING in internal memory with one click. If you can afford both a Backup module and Flash, it's really worth it to get both.

I would suggest the backup module and the 16M Hagiwara module. This is the setup I use and love it. You don't have to worry about moving apps back and forth. You will need to keep any databases that get updated on the internal memory such as documents, pictures etc. I have over 2M available on my Prism and almost 7M on the module. The backup module can be a life saver.

If you got a 16mb module you could probably get by with JackBack.

Ok, Revisiting this idea...!
Okay, I took your advice, and I bought (from discussion board!) a used backup module and a stowaway keyboard. So, here's my new question: Can I store any EDITABLE files (text documents) in one of these options and modify it without copying it to the Visor's RAM?

One suggestion... how about putting the relevant links in the table for us?__________________

God bless America, my home sweet home...
Thanks Mark & Kalahari, I've updated the table and added links to what I thought were the most relevent pages (A couple just go to the PalmGear order page for the product).
The table is still up at the same place .
If anyone else has any suggestions be sure to post'm here or send them to me, I'm just trying to help other people out. Eventually when I have free time I'll buy a real domain and make kyoutenouchi a real site, until then we'll both have to put up with the banner.

You are right. The answer is no, except for the last two.
If you don't want to void your warrenty I would suggest my combination. I have the same combination as the "Gadgetguru":
Backup Module
16M Hagiwara Module.
I have almost all of my program files on the 16MB Module, and just leave the editable ones on the Visor itself. This gives me 6MB free on my Prism and 9 Free on my Module. By using the backup, I've even survived having to do a hard reset!

Shoot!
Well, that's a bummer...
I guess I can just archive documents on the Hagiwara module then... I was thinking that if I *can* sync my visor, I could write HTML on it and then transfer that to a computer. (I'm going to keep a travel web site.) I'll just have to see...
