Has anyone tried the following scenario (want to know before I pony up for a springboard modem):

You're home PC is running Windows 2000 and has DSL and also a 56k modem. Configure your computer to accept incoming calls on the modem and then share the DSL connection. This would (in theory) allow you to configure a springboard modem to dial into your home pc, and let you backup your data to the PC and update your avantgo channels through the DSL. I would imagine you could also browse internet sites, too.

Why would anyone do this? Because I'd have to pay extra for using dial up to access my ISP. I'm only paying to use the ISP in conjunction with my DSL connection.

Advice appreciated.

I dont excatly have the setup you are speaking of (I dont hotsync via modem)

But . . .

My PC does have both a NIC for DSL and a modem that I use as my back and so that the voice mail program MegaPhone can still work.

I should see if this works. I don't think the surfing the web think will work.

I'd be careful there. I don't think that Win2K Pro is setup to provide a network connection on receipt of an incoming call, at least not without special software. This sort of thing is normally handled by Routing and Remote Access Services (RRAS), which ships with the server version of Win2K.

However, you should be able to setup your PC for dial-up HotSyncs. See the User Guide, page 190 (if viewing in Acrobat) - Conducting a HotSync operation via modem. Note that if you stay connected, you can browse the web via AvantGo.

I'm sorry that I cannot speak for W2k, but I do know that this works on Win98.

I have tried a modem Hotsync and I always use a network Hotsync. In both cases, the Hotsync will sync my AvantGo through my DSL connection. I works the same as if you performed a sync in the cradle.

What about on a Mac?

I had a very similar question but with a Mac instead of a W2K machine. Is there any existing software that might be able to do this visor to modem to modem to 'net connection? Thanks

Not exactly. However, your AvantGo conduit will allow browsing after a fashion.
