-- Six defective Edges! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=18930)
Six defective Edges!
After I dropped my 2 year old Deluxe and broke the screen, decided to upgrade to the Edge because of it's sleek looks and smaller size. I really wanted to love it, but I had SIX defective units in a row.
I finally gave up on the Edge, and ordered a Pro. So far, very happy with it.
The first three Edges were from Handspring:
#1 -- backlight didn't work
#2 -- crooked screen
#3 -- wouldn't fit in the charger -- screws were hanging out and wouldn't go in
The next three were from CompUSA:
#4 -- any pressure near the bottom right corner would activate the memo screen -- irritating to have the screen change at will
#5 -- even though the box was sealed, it had someone's data on it -- and the flip cover was 'sprung' -- wouldn't close tightly
#6 -- backlight didn't work!
Hope no one else has my streak of bad luck with the Edge!

I just upgraded to an Edge last week and so far, so good. I have no complaints and everything seems to be working perfectly. I hope I don't have the same string of bad luck that you had. After reading many posts here about people with problem Edges, I seriously started wondering if I made the right choice. I purchased my Edge from Staples (not that where I purchased it makes a difference). I haven't noticed a rattling stylus, or any other infamous Edge problems. Hopefully Handspring made some minor improvements along the way and the the Edges that were manufactured later down the road have less problems. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
quote:Well, best of luck to you. I felt much the same way for the first five months that I owned my Edge. Now I don't trust the thing any farther than I could throw it. I find myself backing up three or four times a day. I never particularly cared about the sled before since I really didn't use modules extremely often. Now it really chafes my @$$. Unless it goes on the fritz again, I'm not bothering getting a replacement, but come Christmas time, I'll be buying something else.

The Edge is the biggest piece of ****. I wish I never wasted my money on it. Handspring tries to pursuade people to buy their organizers because of the "unlimited expansion", yea right, the crap that nobody ever uses. I'm switching to a Color Sony Clie with MP3 player and videos, baby, that's what I'm talking bout.
Hmmm... I am starting to wonder if anyone has had any good experiences with the Edge. I can see it now - if anything goes wrong I am going to be paranoid that the thing is going to crap out on me. Perhaps I should have went with the Pro. I had a tough time deciding between the two; it was the Edge's sleek look that won me over. However, beauty is only skin deep - oh well, too late now.

However, I wholeheartedly agree with everything else you said. The Edge would have been sticking around for a hell of a lot longer were it not for QC problems. This kind of reliability from a device that cost what the Edge cost is simply not acceptable. I even admit to being tempted to the dark side for a brief moment before finding out that I still don't like PocketPC navigation even in its latest incarnation.

The Edge in concept is not a POS! It had a very nice design, looked hot, could fit in my back pocket, and so on. They should have made it 16 meg standard, but otherwise, it's fine by me. The problem with the edge is manufacturing and Quality Control. If the edge were better made & there were a kb, I would still have one now (hell, maybe all I really wanted was the kb. I miss that form factor and them cool looks something awful!)

I have the HS modem, minijam, and backup module. I also have the plastic belt case from HS that I used with my deluxe and 2 pair of rechargeable AAA's. For $300 I can get the neo and a stowaway (I still have a GoType! that I can't stand).
Or I could hawk the accessories and get an m500 for ~$270 and a Palm keyboard. Or an m505 and no keyboard (~$340). Hmmmm.
Or I can claim to be uninspired with all choices and keep my wife's prism until I'm blown away (like I would be with a functional edge) and use the money to get a keyboard and a travel charger with change left over.

I also agree with what you said about the Edge. The biggest flaw is its quality! That's the main reason I'm getting rid of the damn thing. I was also won over by it's looks, I'm a sucker for style. But the time has come to move on after one month of use, I'm gonna be ditching the Edge because it's just not dependable. Peace.
What the..????
Well.. I had one of the first Edge batches out there and no problems at all.
I dropped one, and got it replaced and that unit has not given me ANY problems until now.
No rattling stylus (and I do pop it in and out a lot because I'm studying languages and using as a dictionary/notes), no problems with my springboard add-on (backups), no problems at all except the screen is not that scratch proof. No problems with loose screws either. It sits nicely in my grinder gear bag and goes everywhere with me, from 32 C 98% humidity of Malaysia where you go from 19C dry airconditioned offices to hot/humid conditions (perfect for condensation problems), to sandy beaches, on airlines and now in Korea where the weather is starting to get cold, so it will soon be used in sub 0C degrees. It has entertained me on many a lonely trip too all around Asia. The only other problem I've had is that it does not fit well into the cradle (some connection problems when recharging) but I can easily get a replacement cradle when I get back to Malaysia and the current one works fine if I fit it in a certain way.
It gets thrown about while in the bag and I've never worried about it stuffing up or it causing problems for me.
Except for the lack of a high rez colour screen and bluetooth(not that important when the Edge came out), it has served me really well, and it still has the killer looks for people to look twice everytime I use it.
I wonder what happened to the quality of the Edges that people are buying now? Did they shift the production to Vietnam or something to cut costs? Stuff made in China these days don't have the QC problems I keep hearing about.

I hereby drop my suggestion you move to the handera (which, except for form and mono, is IMO the best PDA out there),

and go to the Pro & a dave design.

Neo's slick, but it you're willing to spend the extra scratch on a cool casing, why not get the 16 megs native?

I know that the instant my prism gets out of its warranty (assuming it lasts that long), I'm upgrading.

Recieved my vaja case for the prism. I'm keeping it. I'm going to put part of the proceeds from the sale of my edge toward a talelight/chargecard (so I don't lose the silent alarm and can recharge at any outlet) and a hotsync cable so I can leave it in the case. I haven't lost anything in the way of portability from the edge.
I've also made the decision to only buy pda's that vaja has a case for - they're that good.
Oh, and screw the keyboard. I still need to buy a cd player for my car.

So you've taken the Prism from your wife? How's the couch these days?

I'm on my third Edge.
I have no quarrel with the way it is constructed; my first two died with the FATAL EXCEPTION ERROR problem. The first lasted 2 weeks, the second lasted 5 months. We'll see what happens with the new one...1 month so far with no problems...

low cost compromises
being relatively low priced.. the visor handhelds DO have more problems relative to other handhelds.
Prism was developed in quite a rush and does have a lot of console and hardware casing issues.
For someone who has had a very bad experience with it eg many replacements. the reason is that its fairly new and when u get a replacement , its new and they dont have many refurbished ones.. which means that they havent checked or repaired them and are sending you a new one (and because of the way they were created.. i dunno how) you are in a better chance of ending up with another broken one.
with visor.. the best bet is to wait some time after a new one comes out so that they sort out the initial glitches. But i guess HS has been learning and the future models will not be as bad as the visoe edge experience.
Good LUck !
God Bless
