-- Prism vs. Edge - Is color really worth it? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12923)
This thread seems to be full of praise for the Prism. I seriously considered getting it but somehow every time I picked it up at the local CompUSA I thought "Naaah, it's not worth it". I simply don't find Prism's color screen good enough to spend $450 when I already have a VDX. Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it, but the screen still looks way too pixelated for my taste. And then there is the issue of using it outdoors... So basically I am just going to wait for now. I really hope something cool is on the way though because I do want color. Actually what I want is something that has the same form factor as the Edge, has a better color screen than the Prism and, unlike the Edge, works with the Stowaway. Now that's something I don't think I could resist!
Hey the new visor edge is really peachy keen....
but...........
Its not a big step up from the prism or deluxe. Sure its a great formfactor but usability is the most important factor in any "tool" in my opinion and use (many people use their pdas for other things so please do not think that I am telling anyone how to use theirs).
What is important to me?
1) maybe a new interface
2) new software (the new flashing light and quick lookup feature is cool, yeah theres some hacks out there but nothing beats the bullet proof versions of rom installed software)
3) COLOR COLOR COLOR (and color to be able to view stuff in sunlight). I mean think of it, theres two versions of visors. THe kind you can use outside and the color ones for the inside. I think thats horrible, we should have BOTH technologies (its not impossible, look at the new palm 500,505)
4) Option of built in hardware such as telephones, wirelessmodems, pagers, tvs, pepper spray, whatever. The new kyrochera (sp?) 6035 from verizon is extremely cool!
5) Built in voice recording like the Win CE Devices and Psion devices (or at least have the OPTION to) without buying an additional module.
Theres a few more gripes but....
I'm not asking for bunches of software, im asking for smarter software (when you use a device and you say, "i wish it could...")
And the other options im asking for is actually to make my life simpler. Most people who carry pdas I can assume (i could be wrong) carry phones and pagers with them. I do like the option of being able to swap out stuff via springboard but heck, nothing beats integrated hardware. I'd rather not carry 3 springboarsd around in my pocket. Its a personal preference and is not a one size fit all sugguestion.

That said, I'm pretty devoted to my Prism. Once you get used to color, it's tough to go back. I still have my VDx, and I get it out occasionally, and can't believe I ever liked the greyscale screen. I might feel differently if I used my Prism in direct sunlight more often (it's very tough to read outside in broad daylight), but I live in Seattle so that's not a serious problem.
I looked at a prism at best Buy and wasn't really impressed with the color screen, either. But it had just the basics on it- so I don't know how an eye module picture or a web page would look. I had been starting to consider buying a prism, but i'm not so sure now.... Might just stay with my VDX and see what else comes out..... Form doesn't matter all that much to me- the edge looks nice, but not for the $.
