Interesting Springboard idea

You know, what if Handspring came up with a springboard adapter. Something that could be attached to any palm OS unit, and that you could plug springboards into. I suspect it would be complicated - i don't know if it would even be do-able. You would need different adapters for different units, but would it be possible? After all, they have things like a GPS unit you can attach to a palm, so extra hardware COULD be added on.

Just an idea to keep the springboard alive.

It would be far more complicated than it was worth. That's not to mention that if Handspring was interested in keeping the springboard alive, they'd be making new PDAs with one.

Very few people want to keep it alive that bad (or at all). What you're proposing (even if it was theoretically possible - and I'm not convinced that it is) would cost a small fortune to develop which means it would cost a lot to buy. How many people have enough invested in Springboards that they'd be willing to shell out hundreds of dollars more to keep using them in other devices? There may be a few, but the really expensive SB modules (MiniJam, GPS, etc.) only sold in the 1000's. And many of those original owners have since sold off their SBs as they moved on to new PDA hardware. Someone who buys a MiniJam on Ebay for $75 isn't going to invest much to keep using it when they replace their Visor.

There won't be any "new" Springboards. Those that currently exist will live on for as long as there are still Visors to use them in. After that they should be allowed to die with dignity - not wired up on life support to a shiny new Palm

The only springboard adapter that I think would be feasible would be one for the Treo series....I am sure there are a lot of Visor users who have shelled out quite a bit of money for a small collection (or even just one in my case) of springboards which are preventing them from upgrading to the shiny new Treos...I think that if Handspring released a Springboard sleeve for the Treo it would allow all those Visors users to continue down the upgrade path. Look how many people went from the Deluxe to the Prism/Edge/Pro because it allowed them to keep their same accessories.

Not technologically possible. On the Treo 180 and 270 the CPU interface that runs the Springboard slot is permanently in use by the wireless hardware. On the Treo 90, it's in use by the SD card interface.
