-- How fast you can write on Visor? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1449)
Hi, some people here help me decided whether I should get the 2Mb or 8Mb version. Thanks. Now, I am concerned I cannot write fast on Visor. Can you really write this thing? Also, how fast you guys can write? So, I have an idea how fast I can write after few months of practice.
I am a PDA newbie. So, please help me on this one.
With the right software, you can do over 70 words per minute! Try typing that on your keyboard...
See link here http://fitaly.com/board/domperignon/index.html
PS: I can highly recommend FitalyStamp if you have to do any data entry.
fitaly's a third party keyboard app, by the way.
as for grafitti - the pre-installed handwriting recognition program on the visor... it takes about a day to learn, and with a little practice, you can write as fast as normal printing... you might even find yourself writing grafitti characters in everyday life! there's a thread about that here somewhere
also, if you want to type, but don't want to learn fitaly, there are 2 keyboards for the visor available. stowaway and gotype. check out james' comparison.

I'm pretty fast. I write in Graffiti a little slower than my normal writing. That's only because, I usually write in cursive on paper, and you have to pick up the stylus between each letter on a PDA, so the program can understand each letter - takes a few seconds longer per sentence. (It's still faster than I type.
)
And yep, I do catch myself writing Graffiti on paper...
You can get pretty good at writing on the Visor .. it does take practice -- however, for any extended writing on the Visor, i HIGHLY recommend getting a Stowaway keyboard..

With Grafitti, I write about 60% as fast as my regular longhand. You're never going to be able to take lecture notes on a Visor, but it's more than adequate for names, numbers, one-sentence notes and to-do items. For volume data entry, you'll need a keyboard like the GoType or, my favorite, the Stowaway.
I tend to get self-conscious when using the Visor to jot down something someone's telling me in real time, like addresses, phone numbers and directions. That self-consciousness interferes with my ability to write quickly, especially since Grafitti's already slower than longhand. I find that it's better to take things down with a pen and paper the first time, then transfer the note to the Visor afterward.
I haven't found typing on the Visor's virtual keyboard to be as fast as writing in Grafitti, but plenty of people disagree. Looking for the key before tapping it slows me down. I'm told the FitalyStamp is a more optimized arrangement of letters for tap-typing than the standard QUERTY layout. I'm looking forward to trying it.
I agree. I can write pretty fast with Graffiti and I can beat most people.
It's true, though, that writing using Graffiti is slower than normal writing.
If you're serious about doing a lot of work on the Visor, the keyboard is the way to go.
Another option you might look at is Jot. There is a demo available at www.shopcic.com. I don't have it on my machine because I didn't want to shell out the $39. (I have a Stowaway which makes Jot not quite as necessary...) I have tried the demo, and found it to be pretty useful. It lets you write in normal characters on the whole screen.
I am afriad that I lost my ability to write normally when I am used to write in my Palm.
I hope this never happens.

(Hopefully getting one this fall for school--waiting to see if there's something better or cheaper because I doubt I would use it really until school starts)
I noticed that on the Dom Perignon page, some of the users said they were using "octave," but I can't seem to find it on Palmgear or anywhere else for that matter. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Vinny,
You claim 70 words per minute isn't fast???? You then say you're looking at a Stowaway... I think that 70 words per minute entering data on a Palm WITHOUT a keyboard attached is fast.
Perhaps I didn't explain right--I apologize. 70 words per minute is blazingly fast with direct hand input--but--he also said "Try that on a keyboard"--and I was pointing out that 70 words per minute on a keyboard is entirely viable. I mentioned getting a Stowaway to show him that I too was considering that option as others have said. I don't think that's too much off topic--I was trying to show him that I felt that direct hand input was not practical for data input really and that I myself was most likely getting a Stowaway for notes for heavy text input. Hopefully this clears things up--sorry for the confusion.
PS HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

I would be so happy if I can write 30 words a minute with that thing. Typically, I can type around 130 - 150 words per minute with a keyboard.
I am getting the Visor Deluxe today. I just want you guys to know that my reason to buy this Visor is because of you guys. I know when I encounter any problems using the Visor, you guys will always be here.
Also try NOTETAKER and TEXTPLUS, two apps that offer text fill-in as you write.
(Like, you write: "tel" and it guesses "evision" -- that's "7 free letters" you get for writing 3, like a 233% gain, right?)
There's an application that tests how fast you write with Graffitti, it's called "WPM" I think (I deleted it and don't remember).
I got it up to about 45 wpm with graffitti on my Visor, which I guess is pretty good from reading the thread. I type over 85 wpm, so I was kinda disappointed with my 45 with graffitti, but to me it seems like that's fast enough to take some good notes.

Hmmmmmmmm......
I write slow enough in graffiti (no, I didn't get Fitaly) that I broke down and bought a Stowaway keyboard for lap and desk-based visor usage. It works like a charm. Highly recommended.
I learned Graffiti by playing the GIRAFFE game that came on the Visor CD. Kind of addictive...
I learned Graffiti by playing Giraffe too!

I'll throw my two cents in for Fitaly. I never could really master graphiti... too many mistakes and too slow. Of course, if my handwriting was better in general, that would probably help. With Fitaly, I can type rather fast (haven't ever timed myself, though). I take sermon notes with Fitaly and never miss a beat. And I expect that typing on the Visor with a pen is probably less distracting to myself and others than pulling out a keyboard as well and propping it up (on my knees?).
Just my 2 cents.
