driving in style

as much style as you can muster behind the wheel of a '98 Suzuki Esteem at any rate. It's a nice vehicle (if the clutch and transmission can handle the next week while I get used to a manual). The relationship started off rather rocky when the engine killed 5 times while trying to test drive it off the lot - before being told buy the salesman that the parking brake can get in the way of optimal vehicle performance.

Next thing on the agenda: replacing the factory tape deck with a cd player and putting better speakers in. What's the best I can do for $300?

If it's a standard DIN opening (most vehicles are nowadays), Aiwa has a nice CD/radio that supports MP3. Just burn your favorite MP3's onto a CD and have 6 hours of audio at your fingertips!

I think it supports directories for the MP3s, so you could categorize them however you want. I'd have to look that up, though.

Model #'s

Ok. Now that I'm home I can actually look these up.

There are actually 2 Aiwa's and a Kenwood that fit, sort of. The least expensive is the Aiwa CDC-MP3 @ $299.95. The other Aiwa is CDC-MP32 for $349.95. The Kenwood is KDC-MP8017 for $359.99. You can find more information on them from Crutchfield .

Keep in mind that Crutchfield isn't usually the cheapest price, but they do have them. Check the units out @ Crutchfield, then check around for a better price.

Crutchfield is a nice site. I was able to pick out the best speakers for my car w/o any modifications. I checked around, and while their prices weren't the cheapest for the speakers, they were close enough that I bought from them any way. Here's the speakers I found:

I'm still debating getting a lower quality reciever / cd player with mp3 vs. better quality w/o mp3. I'm probably going to pass - just to keep everthing comfortably w/in my price range sounding as good as possible.

I only buy aftermarket car stereos from Crutchfield. I've scored two great Blaupunkt stereos from them. Their closeouts are great bargains.
I also love the fact you can get an installation kit for almost any car out there.

You could go to a local Circuit City or Best Buy and get a return pretty cheap, I got a nice Kenwood for the wife's Blazer and it only had a little scratch.

ROFL!

Don't know the model, but enjoy your car!

The first Aiwa sucked ass; don't know about the second one. My friend has the Sony; it's OK. I think the JVC is the best so far, but Blaupunkt has announced a new MP3 deck. I have a Blaupunkt (my first) in my 2000 Dodge Stratus SE. Very nice stuff!
BTW, look on eBay. I got my Blaupunkt with remote control for $100 less than Crutchfield, and yes,it was new in the box.

Thanks.

On a side note: it's rather nice having a mechanic you can trust. The engine was idling rather high, and rather than dinking with the dealer, I took it to my guy. 2 minutes - no charge - no appointment necessary.

I own the first Aiwa CD player and it works like a champ, I'd have to say that more than likely your speakers will matter more than your reciever. It certainly sounds better than the factory tape deck and I've had absolutely zero problems with it. It can be had for between $200-$250 now. Just to let you know, Aiwa is owned by Sony.

Or you can just do what I did. Take out the old CD, put in a new CD (sony), and then a CB radio, Police Scanner, TV, Playstation and radar detector. My car is nuts, but I love it .

And now a deer hit the side of my vehicle. If that doesn't piss me off...

Well, I got the speakers and am going to install them myself. I figure I'm spending $285 to have the dent popped out the scratches painted over, they can spend 15 minutes showing me how to get my door panels off.

If my analysis is correct - the factory tape deck is ready for a cd changer. I think I'll go that route.

Speakers are in - very easy to do. Found out getting a in-dash cd player is cheaper than a cd changer - hopefully easy enough to install myself as well.
