Lost DateBk & AddressBk during BB restore

This morning, my batteries were low so I performed a hotsync and them I put in new batteries. When I went to turn on my Visor Deluxe, it wouldn't power up. Thinking that the batteries were dead, I installed a new, fresh set of batteries. It still wouldn't power up. I then did a soft reset, and the unit got stuck in a loop where it wouldn't get off the opening Palm screen. I checked my Palm Desktop and confirmed that my datebook, address book, etc were all intact and then I performed a hard reset.
Thereafter, I put the unit in the cradle, performed a hot sync and watched as BackUpBuddy restored everthing. When I went into my Visor, however, both my AddressBk and DateBk were completely blank. The ToDo and Memo data was fine. My password was also missing. I then went back into Palm Desktop and found that the AddressBk and DateBk were now also empty.
BTW, in my hotsync settings in Palm Desktop, the AddressBook and DateBook were set at "Desktop overwrites Handheld".
1) What could have gone wrong?
2) Do my old files still exist somewhere on my computer?
3) I did have my files backed up on the flash memort module but I am afraid to put that into the Visor in case there is something that will corrupt those files or delete them also.

By default, BackupBuddy does not backup the databases for the built-in apps. There's a setting in the BB Configuration Manager that allows you to override it. I'm not sure why your data would disappear based upon what you said... I believe BB automatically sets a "Desktop overwrites handheld" when it detects a hard reset. Hopefully, the folks at BlueNomad can help, though I think your dat is probably gone (except for that memory module).

I recently experienced the problem of an infinite loop reset after changing batteries (changed batteries and got trash image on screen, reset = infinite loop). The strange thing is, everything was working fine before I changed batteries. No resets in a very long time. So I hard reset, did a restore and was told I had to reset (probably because of the Handspring update, I've got a VPL) and it goes into another infinite reset loop. I had to go in and manually install everything to get it to stop looping.

Anyway, whenever I do a restore, I make sure that the default conduits are set to Desktop overwrites Handheld just to make sure everything gets put back the way it was. MarkEagle is also correct, there is a setting to in BB to backup the default databases.

So, does anybody know why changing batteries causes so much trouble?

The Stowaway keyboard driver also forces a reset upon installation. I've found that it's best to [u]not[/i] restore these after a hard reset. I move the updater and Stowaway files out of my backup directory first, do my restore, then sync them individually to the Visor after the restore is done (and I can confirm my apps and data are ok). Of course, this doesn't work when restoring from the Backup Module, so I only use that as a last resort (luckily, I'm never far from one of my two desktop's).

The manual for BB says that the built-in app databases are backed up by their own conduits, and that you need to override this only if you are using non-Palm conduits. I know that, in the past, I have seen the Palm apps databases backed up on my hard drive, so I know that BB must have done it. And again, the weird thing in my case was that the two databases that were empty after restoring them were the two that were configured as "Desktop overides Handheld".

I also got bit by this because I had the conduits for the built-in set to "Do Nothing". This was on my work computer, where I didn't want to sync todos, contacts, etc. So when I had to do a restore at my work computer I was without those databases until I went home and did a restore there.

On a side note, if you happen to sync at more than one computer, and you have a situation where you need to do a restore, I would certainly recommend only syncing to the computer to which you last synced.

For example, I sync at home and then at work I have to do a restore for some reason. It's better to wait until I get home to sync instead of using my work computer (which has older backup files). When I haven't done it this way I've ended up with lots of duplicates in some of the databases.
