Question

Hi,
This is my first post, so I hope I get some answers. My question is; Does anybody out there know of anybody out there working on a module to provide wireless web access like the Palm VII (without a modem or connection to a wired network) ?

Thanx for your answer Hoser, but, unless I'm missing something, all of the mentioned modules on the VisorCentral Module page that mention Web access do it through GSM AND a cellularc phone. Please tell me if I'm missing it, but I se no reference to any module that can access the web without an additional cell phone.

i think it would be difficult for handspring to organize a wireless internet system right now. as for 3rd party, i guess a phone company could come up with a module, but then that would compete with the cell phones that they sell and i don't think they want to ruin alliances with cell phone manufacturers. that leaves the network that the Palm VII works on. and what are the odds that Palm will develop a springboard that allows visor users to use the PalmVII network? ( www.palm.net ) not very likely.

so for now, i guess a wireless network module isn't in the picture. it's not to say it'll ever happen though.

There is another possibility. OmniSky http://www.omnisky.com has a hardware and service to make a Palm V perform like a VII. They are in a position where they might come up with the hardware for a Visor to do the same thing.

Yes,
I emailed Omnisky about a week ago and the response that I got was along the lines of "only V for now, but we are hoping to make the service avaible to other PDA's"

Ben,

I read a posting from an OmniSky eGroup with an email response from an OmniSky CSR saying that they currently had no plans to release a Springboard version of their modem.

Gameboy,
I never said or quoted that a SpringBoard was going to be released, but that they were hoping to go to other PDA's. I found the orginal message in my e-mail, here it is.

Hello ,

Thank you for your interest in OmniSky!

For the beta period we will only be testing our service on the Palm V/Vx
series. After the beta we will investigate carrying our service over to
other devices such as the Handspring Visor - check our website at www.omnisky.com for updates.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at (800)

Another possiblity for areas that support it, would be Ricochet modems. I contacted them about the possiblity of a Ricochet Springboard, but have recieved no response as of yet.

Question

Maybe I'm just being lame, but why wouldn't a WAP browser coupled with a wireless modem not be at least as good as the Palm VII's PQAs?
