Alright, here is where i need some help here. I am going to be a junior in highschool, and i am thinking of getting a visor, but i will probably want the latest thing when i go to college. If I buy a Visor Deluxe (the one with the big memory) will it still be pretty good in 2 years? Or is Handspring going to come out with something cooler very SOON? My brother told me they probably won't come out with a new visor for a while because of the expansion... just need some input from you all. Thank you

Answer to your question, expect the PDA/Hardware industry to 'roll-over' about every 6 months. If it's out now, it will be cheaper in 6 months, due to the new bigger and better product the company is releasing. That's true for just about any digital technology.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but just because someone in High School buys something nice doesn't mean he has a silver spoon in his mouth. I bought my Blue VDx in the middle of my Freshman year and I paid for every cent of it on my own. So did my friend.

In reply to the 'should I wait' argument: There is a color Visor that is planned I believe--but don't count on it being released anytime soon. Besides, someone on this forum says there's a law that states "Never wait for the next best thing, because by then, there will be another next best thing". If you really want it, get it. Especially for the Stowaway. I just got mine this Sunday for my birthday, and I love it. I can't wait to use this for taking notes. We sometimes have a whole 70 minute period of note-taking and this will be a Godsend! If you can spare $74 bucks, get a Stowaway if you can--this will be my primary usage for my Visor now.

Hey, give Gremlin16 a break! What difference does it make if he saved for it himself or had it bought for him? He's got a valid question about the longevity of the product and doesn't want to be stuck with something that is going to be replaced in a few months with something better. I'm glad he is asking good questions and is using a piece of technology to improve his time management. I don't think having a Visor is a sign of immense wealth and having been born well. Heck, it is about the least expensive PDA with the best features on the market, thus the skyrocketing sales.

And yes, ryvitek, you do sound like a jerk...

I got mine in 8th grade for my christmas, birthday and graduation presents. My parents actually stuck to it that it was all 3 lol, but dammit to hell it was worth it!!! Even though im on my 3rd visor Deluxe. Theyre great though, they only break if youre stupid, or if you let someone else (your little brother or a cute girl) touch it

I agree. Remember that a few "young people who have done no physical activity" are actually millioaires now. Just look at Steve Jobs or Bill Gates who became millionaires before they turned 30! I'm 28 and in my country, getting a Visor Deluxe means shelling out more than half my monthly income and yet I saved and managed to buy a Visor.

To answer your question, Gremlin16, I heard that Handspring is gonna come out with a Palm V-like device soon. Jeff Hawkins said as much in one of his PC Epo interviews. Of course, such a device would most likely be more expensive than the current Visor. so, it all boils down to whether you want style and slimness over the affordbility of the current Visor.

For me, I'd go with the current Visor because:
1. I can't wait till December - I need one now!
2. I'm already a nerd and getting a oooler-looking handheld won't make me look any cooler.

Just my 2 cents. He does have a valid question...especially if he is working for his own money and wants to spend it wisely. I'm only 19 and I've been working since I was 16...full time for the past year. I spent countless time reading every review and scrap of info I could find before I went out and bought a VDx. $250 is a lot of money to spend. (Factoring in taxes and such I spent almost an entire week's paycheck on it.) Personally I love it and use it a lot now. More so when school starts back in the fall. It doesn't look like anything newer will be released anytime soon so go ahead and buy it, always trade up later.

Well, if there were Visor Deluxes when I was a junior in high school, and if I was actually making enough money to buy one, I'm sure I would have bought one. Although my parents probably would have frowned upon me "wasting" my money on such a frivolous "gadget".

Anyway, I don't know what Handsprings plans are as far as future Visors. If you're following their financial status, they're still not making a profit (yeah they're generating revenue, and yeah their losses are decreasing, but they are still losing money). So I don't think it would be advantageous for them to release a whole new model at this point. I predict that they will concentrate on encouraging the development of 3rd party Springboard modules, as this is the Visor's major selling point. So, if you have at least narrowed your choice down to buying a Handspring product, I think you would be fairly safe buying a Visor Deluxe at this point.

Unless Handspring decides to gamble, and reacts to Palm's recent announcement of several changes to its product line...

To answer the original question: yes, get the Visor. You'll definitely get two years out of it. There'll always be some better unit six months from now, so it's pointless to wait. 8MB is more than adequate for most people, since Palm OS products don't handle multimedia files like the Pocket PC. I have even use 2 megs on mine.

O.k., I'll jump in:

Leave the poor kid alone. Leave the jerk alone. Let's just try to answer the question without getting tooooo off topic.

My opinion - A Visor is like a car, or a cell phone, or really anything else electric or electronic. They're ever changing, and there will always be a newer better thing coming out shortly. You can wait for it, and never have anything, or you can bite the bullet and get and enjoy it now.

The way I look at it is: It's not an investment, it's a purchase. If you think you will get your hard earned $250 out of it, get it, and hopefully 2 years from now you will still be using it and it will still have some value. You can wait for price to go down, or for new technology to come out, but even if you get a better deal in 6 months, you've lost 6 months worth of Visor use, and that is worth something.
