deluxe broken?

recently ive noticed the screen on my VDX seems loose? like i can shift it a bit, and if it moves while im using it it loses power, now obviously there is something wrong,

Is there any way i can fix this myself?

Also i bought it from futureshop ( i know bad move) adn not directly from handspring, can i still get them to help me?

Ah, another poor Futureshop ripped off Canadian, my father designed a few futureshops...never got paid of course...doesn't that just sound like them?

easy to replace screen

try gethightech.com. I replaced the digitizer, and it was easy. A new glass screen (digitizer) costs $55 delivered. I think a total screen and digitizer is prob $80 delivered. Not significantly lower than buying a new one.

Even if you don't by directly from Handspring, the device should be covered under their warranty (unless it has expired, of course).

Of course, given that it is a deluxe, chances are the warranty period has indeed expired. One thing you could try is to tighten up the screws that hold the screen in place. To do this you have to open up the outer case and then look for the screws inside.

hmmmm... there aren't any screws holding the screen in place; there are only little plastic tabs. If your warranty has expired, you can open up the Visor -- it's incredibly easy to disassemble and reassemble; I've done it at least thirty times for various reasons.

For removing the screws on the backplate, the special metal/translucent plastic styli made by Handspring have the perfect size of screwdriver built in. Just twist the handle counterclockwise, and it'll come out of the barrel.

When you say that you lose power, do you mean that the battery starts draining, or the screen turns off?

It sounds almost as if the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard is coming loose -- I had this problem a few times. This will happen especially if you put your Visor in the knee-pockets of your cargo pants where they get jostled around when you're walking/running.

Try pulling the ribbon cable out and reinserting it (you must flip up the two brown tabs before you pull it out). If you still have problems, cut a little piece of newsprint or magazine to the width of the ribbon cable and insert it into the connector along underneath the cable (not on top, 'cuz that's where the contacts are ) I found this solved all my problems with the screen turning off, by creating a snug fit.
