-- LCD - Visor vs. Palm V(x) (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=318)
I've read in various places (including the "Second Opinion Visor Reviewed" on the front page) that the Visor has the Palm V(x) LCD.
Why then, did the writer of "A Developer's Perspective" say that the Palm V screen was "much better" than the Visor's?
How do the two screens compare?

(Wow, a new thread that has absolutely nothing to do with CSR's, ship dates, or whatever!
)

Mike,
I just called Handspring and the CSR I talked to said the ship dates will probably slip because of concerns over that review of the Visor<>Palm V display...
Oops! Sorry, but I seemed to have ruined this thread.
(for those with a delayed funny-bone: I'm kidding!)
As for the differing opinion, I suspect a subjective mindset was slipped in. I've now seen over a dozen 'first looks' of the Visor that mention the screen, and EVERY ONE but the one you point out state they see no difference between the display on the Visor and the Palm V (or at the most a difference so negligible as to mean nothing to the reviewer).

Well, my CSR said that Handspring was real worried about this Palm V(x) <> Visor thing. She says that the new item in the works is called the Elvisor and it comes with a better screen, that gets blurry at night. It comes with a Rhinestone/Vinyl case and a plastic/marbleized stylus. Dunnogear is releasing a springboard called, ironically, the six-pack which includes, among other things, a GPS that tells you how far you are from Graceland and an MP3 player with the entire Elvis collection in ROM (sorry, no flash ROM!).
OK, Im just kidding too.
Seriously, I read that in several reviews as well, but the picture with the IIIx, Visor and V side by side made the Visor appear to look more like the IIIx than the V. Thats why I ask.
Anyone have any first-hand knowledge?
MJH <><
I have a Visor Dlx and my boss has a Palm V. The screens look the same.

SLUGGO!
You know too much AND you already have a VDlx. Just what the heck is going on here.
Who do you work for?
Who did you pay off?
I want answers...uh...and the inside track on how...
He won his Visor at Internet World ... that lucky so and so.
By the way according the Handspring site, shipping has begun!
-Eric
sluggo won a Visor, not only does he have one, but he got it for free and I believe he was lucky enough to have been picked by Mr Handspring himself... but sluggo is only king for a day or should I say a week or maybe heaven forbid another month or two...****, I think I'll make "wait anxiety" my next topic at the shrink this week.

LCDs? Again?
I havn't seen a Visor screen - and NEITHER HAVE YOU!
But I just had a look at a working Palm V screen (supposed to be the same as Visor), I then flipped open my IIIx to compare.
The pixel size is exactly the same. The V LCD backscreen (the greenish thing) is a little bit lighter in color. That's the only difference.
Expect the Visor to be the same as Palm a V or IIIx.

Sluggo has a Visor, he's seen the screen.

If you had a Palm V you'd suggest its screen was so much better than the IIIx's that you considered the IIIx junk, a serious user would never consider a IIIx because he would go blind after the first look at it. Everybody here knows how biased you are.
After all what I have read about different LCD qualities I would like to know - what is the difference exactly?
The IIIx is workable for me, and I can't really tell a major difference to the Palm V.
For sure, pixel size and number/area are the same. I have not done a detailled check, but I think it's difficult to spot which is which if you just see the screen.
I know that Palm markets the V screen as superiour - please enlighten me!
Hip Hop,
The Palm V screen is superior. For starters, it uses a higher screen refresh rate than the Palm IIIe and above. As a result you will notice that text and objects on the screen look darker and more crisp than the IIIx series.
Also they(V)are made from a different manufacturer, EPSON. You will also notice in a side by side examination that the V has a slightly darker/greener background, slightly reminiscent of the older Palm III, only much better.
Hope this answers your question.

One of my office gals will order a Palm V (Visor too difficult to get overseas). Will have a detailled look then.
Right, the IIIx screen is a bit darker in the backround which makes the Palm V look a bit more 'crisp'. I would not spend another $150 or so just for that (and for less memory).
But my gal said the Palm V looks more 'sexy' - I guess it does.

The backgrounds on the IIIx and the V are smoother... they're not as grainy as the III's. But aside from a possibly faster refresh rate, did anyone pay attention to the actual PIXEL SPACING?
On the IIIx, you can see space between the pixels pretty easily. On the V, the pixels are packed even tighter together. That, combined with a darker black (the IIIx is a little brownish), makes the V screen better. So, no, HipHop, they're not the same. And maybe I just have good eyes, but I can't believe that other people haven't seen what I believe to be an appreciable difference between the two. Oh yeah, BTW, the pixel spacing makes the screen dimensions SMALLER on the V.
A Handspring rep told me in an email early on that the Visor screen was "better than the IIIx". But from the dimensions I've seen on the net, it looks as if the screen is not the exact same screen as the V. We'll see...
Just my $0.02. I went to the Grand Openeing of a new Circuit City today. (My first and last visit) Anyway, I looked at their Palms IIIx and V for screen quality. (I own a Pilot 5000) While both where easier to read than my model. The V's screen was noticably sharper than the IIIx. And the IIIx screen was quite brown looking. I certainly hope that my Visor has the V's screen.
I saw the Visor at Internet World... I would consider the
Visor screen to be the same as the Palm V.. no question.
thanks for your support microman. i've been saying that since i won my Visor Dlx @ Fall Internet World.
the Visor screen is superoior to tne IIIx (I also own one of those). My boss (amongst others at work) have Palm Vs. The screen quality of the Visor looks to be equal to that of the V, IMHO.
sluggo
Sluggo,
I think you are the only actual Visor user here.
I will compare the screen when my office gal will get her Palm V. When I had a look last week there wasn't too much time and the light wasn't good.
Funny, why doesn't Palm uses the same screen for all PDAs? The cost should be the same - or even cheaper since volume gets higher. Looks to me as they only want to give reasons to buy a more expensive Palm V - pure marketing.
Sluggo, how does the Palm Desktop software compare to the Visor one?
Does the IIIx syncronizes with the Visor Desktop software?
(You are the only one here I can ask!)
the desktop software that comes with the visor is the same as what comes with the palm IIIx or V.
the only difference is that there are .inf files for the visor connecting via usb.
chris (sluggo)
HipHop, I'm surprised a person of your obvious intellect, and full member status of this board, doesn't know the difference between the V and IIIx screens is the background tint. One has a green-based tint, the other a black-based tint.
dmkozak,
it's not just the tint that is different. the IIIx and V screens are manufactured by 2 different companies.
