-- Upgrading a Deluxe to a Prism? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10977)

Posted by Traveliter on 01-18-2001 06:18 AM:

I have a Visor Deluxe. I just upgraded to a Prism, and would like to transfer all of the data from my Deluxe to the Prism.

I just assumed I could:
1. HotSync my Deluxe and back up its data
2. Plug the HotSync cradle of my Prism onto my Mac.
3. Charge my Prism
4. Under "Owner" in my Prism, type in my name (same as for my Deluxe)
4. Click the HotSync button on the Prism's cradle
5. The desktop Palm app tries to find the user, and and finds my name for my Prism.
6. Set up the HotSync so that I write over the handheld with my backup files.

Now.. I am eading the Prism quick ref guide, and it says the following:

"The first time you synchronize, you must select a user name and click OK. Every handheld needs a unique name. Never synchronize more than one handheld to the same user name on your computer."

However in an earlier section, it says, "After you upgrade you hve two handhelds with the same user name. Since each handheld must have a unique name, perform a hard reset on your old handheld to remove the user name and avoid problems synchronizing with that device. The next time you synchronize that device, be sure to assign it a new name."

Am I to understand correctly to this warning is so that I don't end up working on two different Visors and inputting two different sets of data into them, in which case one of the backups will not be correct for the other? That makes sense... but being the careful person I want to make sure that's what is going to happen.

I won't lose all my third-party apps, right?

I'm doing the same upgrade on the next weeks, but since I probably don't have the same computer then, I'll buy the backup module for that purpose.

Will it work? Can I restore the backup from the deluxe to the prism? the backup would save all third party applications, with their registrations and databases?

Cool

Yes, it will work, if you are careful. (at least it worked for me).

Just note that the Owner name you type in under "Prefs" is not what the Visor uses to identify the handheld when sync'ing - it uses the User Name(s) set up in the Palm Desktop under "Tools > Users..."

When you do this with a new (never before sync'ed or hard reset) handheld, you should see a dialog from the Palm Desktop that asks you to select a user. This user identifier will then be associated with your new Prism.

You could certainly have two handhelds with the same user name - the problem is that the Palm Desktop thinks there is only one, so when you sync them both you'd get out of... well... sync.

So now I notice that you posted this message a week ago, so it's probably a moot point, eh?

You could do a complete backup and restore it to the Prism, but it could be problematic with s/w and patches that are not Prism compatible.

Your best bet is to install all your apps from scratch. Then sync in your contacts, etc.
