Handspring Not Announcing New Models Today

Unless a spokesperson for Handspring was willing to flat out lie through his teeth, Handspring will not be announcing any new handheld models today, as was previously rumored. In an e-mail exchange on Handspring's recent price cuts, Brian Jaquet, a company spokesperson, said, "Sorry to disappoint you, but that is all that is being announced today."

:::shrug::: It was only a rumor, after all - I could see being upset if Handspring had announced it would be announcing new models today and then recanted, but they didn't.

Since the new models are likely to disappoint most hardcore Visor fanatics anyway (Midrange, monochrome models not offering much more than increased memory), I'm not all that excited by the 'new model buzz' this time around anyway. ;-)

I was hoping for a Handera like device with 16 megs, memory OS 4.x, collapsable graffiti, 45 mhz, with power options like Handera, lighter, smaller, with better wireless attachment that could fit into the bottom to leave the springboard open for memory. If I was not stuck with 5 springboard modules, I would probably buy the Handera.

Oh, and with two springboard slots, an SD slot, and a Memory Stick slot too. And integrated wireless with no monthly fee and GPS, in the Edge form factor. But not with the Edge springboard connector. And sell it for $99.

Handspring cuts handheld prices
20 August 2001 -- Handspring has reduced the price of a number of its handheld computers in preparation for the 'back to school' selling season in the US.

Its entry level Handspring Visor will sell for $129 and the Visor Deluxe for $169, a reduction of $30. The Visor Platinum drops $50 to $199 and the Visor Edge, Handspring's latest product, will be reduced by $100 to $299. The price of the Visor Prism, which has a colour screen, remains unchanged. Handspring is targeting the reductions at the youth and educational markets, and will also cut the price of its GameFace joystick adapter to $24.95. The handheld market has come under increasing price pressure since Palm announced that it had accumalated $300m of excess inventory earlier this year. Since then both Handspring and Palm have cut prices across their ranges. The reductions have also fuelled speculation that Handspring is planning to introduce one or more new devices in the near future.

"Handspring continues to provide quality handheld computing products to a broad range of consumers, and these new prices on our line of handhelds make it more attractive for people to own a Visor handheld," said Greg Woock, Vice President of North American sales for Handspring, Inc. springboard+price=handspring that was the reason I got my Vdx over any other device. I considered the m100 once but decided to wait for a deal and it came. One of my folks work buddies sold me their ice Vdx for $100 (it was a remanufactured HS). HandEra looks pretty cool. Personally if I could afford it I'd rather have the latest Compaq iPaq.

Yes yhose new iPaq's are mighty appealing. Now if I could just justify NEEDING it I would go ahead and buy it. BUt at that price I can by a pretty good PC.

I've been there... sold my prism, and picked up a ipaq 3670. I use my ipaq 1/3 the amount that I used my Visor.... grrrr.

At the risk of repeating what I've said in other threads, I acquired the top of the line iPaq for free when my wife's client gave it back to her thinking it had defects. Since it was free, I went out and bought the CF sleeve, a 128 mg CF card and a Vaja case.

Tried to use it for a week, after which it remained on my dresser at home. Yeah, it does movies and mp3s (but only after you lay out the additional $150 or so for CF) but it's heavy, big and just not as useful or user friendly as the Prism. And programs for the damn thing (those that are available) are expensive. My 11 year old son thought it was cool and asked for it, until I brought home a Nomad for his older sister. Then the iPaq didn't look so cool anymore.

When he comes back from camp I still might let him have it -- if he asks now that he got the Nomad II for his birthday.
