-- Another question on memory use (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=246)
This is one for all you former (and present) Palm (PDA
) users:
If I create a .PST file in Outlook with just Calendar items and Task items and the file is, say, 2 MB, will it be 2 MB on my PDA, or does the PDA just transfer the text into the memory and leave off the "fluff" that Outlook files come with (formatting, etc).
Perhaps this would be a consideration for those folks who will synch their work PIM with their home PIM...I know it is w/me. *Definitely* have to go with the 8 MB VDx.

Good question. Outlook shows my calendar at 338K & Contacts at 179K. My Palm III shows my Date Book to be 59K and Address Book to be 15K.
Why can't Microsoft do this? :-)

My guess is that the Visor/Palm apps basically need a record number, the text info, date info/codes, and a category flag for each entry. It has no need to store special formatting info.
My Palm Datebook has 1253 records and occupies 79k, and my Address Book has 257 records and occupies 32K... Not too terribly bad. I won't venture to say how big my Outlook file would be (notes included) if I actually used that software.
One extra note: on my Palm Desktop, the Datebook is 196K and the Address book is 87K.
"Why can't they" indeed!
Thanks for the info...if those "ratios" hold true throughout (e-mail, etc.), I'll be able to synch my in-boxes as well.
