Apple leaks G5 info.... holy #$%# (warning spoilers)

This is pretty amazing - apple accidently leaked on their applestore a graphic which had the major specs for their new G5's (powerpc 970, 64 bit, to be released 6/23)

HOLY $#%$#%

Here are some links to view the image

Dual 64 bit 2 ghz systems (will that kick intels ass yet?!) (also 1.6 and 1.8 ghz) with up to 8 GB ram, SATA drives, (finally) USB 2, optical in out audio, 1 Ghz system bus (thanks hypertransport!) and more..

I AM SO EXCITED! WOW! I cannot wait for 6/23

This is very cool. With a nice hardware platform, Mac OS X getting fairly mature and now QT apps being ported, this is looking like a GREAT platform.

Get to use my fav linux apps, get a UNIX based CLI, get native photoshop and all that stuff.. very very nice.

Of course, knowing apple, the price will be astronomical and it won't ship for a few months so I'll probably end up not buying one .. hehe...

Link on G5

Here's an interesting article on the G5, describing the optimization they needed to disable in the Wintel machines before the G5 was able to beat them in the performance tests.

And as a counter, see all the extra discusisons on slashdot and macrumors.com on this issue. It is very ahrd to do corss platform benchmarking, and it seems that apple did hte best they could. They used GCC instead of ICC and a G5 native compiler. They disabled Hyperthreading per Dell's own specifications. (HT on Xeon's slows things down)

The software/hardware tweaks are all supposed to be in the final machines. I'm sorry that i odn't have links on me right now, but everything i've said is from the above two sites...

Yeah, cross platform benchmarks are tough to do, but I'm very dubious of Apple's claims here, primarily because a friend and former Apple employee is laughing at them.

I personally don't think benchmarks are all that important, within reason.
