-- Is color really worth the price? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14156)

I LOVE having color! It's worth it to me. I waited 3 years before getting a Palm-like PDA - I was a Sharp Wizard user for years. I'm so glad I went with color!

Good points all. Because of my love for the Stowaway, and my need to use my Visor outdoors, I'll stick to the Platinum for now. At least I have a Vaio Z505 to give me slightly "portable" color and multimedia for now. I'll just keep my fingers crossed for a color "edge."

Just can't do the price..

I agree- I'm going to wait for now. I've also been really craving a prism. I am happy with my blue vdx for a year now. But really would like color. But everytime I think I'm ready to take the plunge and buy, I just can't pay that much. $450 is ALOT of money. I could get a palm IIIc for 299! But I have to admit I'm hooked on handspring. I also have a couple springboards and invested alot of time and effort into figuring out how to connect my visor to my cell phone!

So I guess I'll just wait it out until the price comes down!

As you can tell by me changing my signature, I now own a prism!!!! Thanks everyone for your helping me to decide!!

forvisor-

Congrats! I'm sure you will love owning a Prism. The only problem I have ever had with mine was that the first unit I bought had a stuck pixel. CompUSA promtly exchanged that one for one from an unopened box, and that unit has given me no problems whatsoever. So check out your screen really well now, and then enjoy.

We must be responding to subliminal advertising or something. I just bought a Prism myself less than an hour ago, as a birthday present to myself. I'm charging it right now. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I was going to wait for the m505's release, but I reevaluated on the following:

  • I've grown accustomed to the size, so the slimmer m505 will make me jealous, but not anxious

  • I can order a Mark/Space data cable for my cell phone today
  • A cobalt blue PDA looks fantastic next to the Sony Vaio
  • Well, I had to get myself something!

True! But I have to say, I really do love the Prism. I was ambivalent about getting one for months after trying one out at CompUSA a couple of times. The first one I tried had serious digitzer problems: the character recognition was terrible. The second time was all right, but the display model only had the vanilla built-in apps, so I couldn't see what a difference color makes on much of the third party software that's out there, like Album-to-Go, DrawIt and Galax. My only complaint is how unreadable the display is outdoors in sunlight, which fortunately is largely a non-issue for me.

My advice to anyone on the fence about it is: get it. If finance is an issue, get a temp job. But the Prism rocks!

On the fence here.

But now that new Sony is calling.
Word is end of May that sweet machine ships-English.

Think I'll wait and see.

Would you please reduce that image to a reasonable size and use it as an avatar?!? This is becoming some sort of epidemic.

Yes, perhaps the VC folks could put restrictions about on having images in sigs (or at least restrict the size of the images!) James? Marcus? Is this possible?

color

Can someone out there tell me what I want to hear. The prism is 'just like' my Vdlx only w/color. Please say it's so.

I have a vdlx. I'm in the tech biz and it's the 1st product out of 1000's (and $1000's), that has met and exceeded my expectations. Then I gave my beloved(newbie) a IIIc on valentine's day, thinking color would thrill as well as encourage use. I also loaded it with palmasutra app and playmate slideshow to impress his boys.

BUT....the thing sucks! Luckily, HE doesn't know any better but me thinks he's starting to catch on.
The worst problem is graffiti recognition, which is goobleygook. I read usegroups saying that the digitizer is the prob on 3 out of 5. Oh, and worst part is Palm, they pretend ignorance of this well known graffiti issue. Anyway, I bought a 3 year warranty on it from staples, and they will take it back but now I don't know which to get.

Prism? neg: size, short battery life, and some graffiti mutterings here as well...(your comments here, please)

m505? neg: dim screen(how dim), unknown graffiti quality, price, no modem available, plus who wants to reward those rats at palm.

exchange for another IIIc???- dang! This should have been a winner. The screen is bright, color good enough for pics, great price est$299 But the graffiti makes me want to throw it out the window. Can't even click on buttons.

OR...switch him to grayscale like VX or Vdlx-my Vdlx has never given me 1 problem, and I work it hard.
BUT I WANT MY COLOR- why can't 'they' make it work?
Can someone out there tell me what I want to hear. The prism is 'just like' my Vdlx only w/color. Please say it's so.

It's a matter of expectations. The PRISM is an upgrade from the the VDX. As someone who relies on Visors, I can say that the move to the PRISM from the VDX was worthwhile. It's faster, easier to use (because of the color usr interface), and the new color apps are more rewarding to use.

The other bottom line is that these are transitional devices and you are an early adopter. They are too heavy, slow, thick and non-intuitive for widespread use by normals like my wife and mother. As soon as the hardware (screens, batteries, internal memory, wireless speeds) gets it together, and service companies like banks or employers pass them out free, you will see them reach their full potential as personal digital assistants.

gbgood, you didn't mention the sony clie in your list of choices (iiic, prism, m505). you could also give in to the dark side and switch completely over to a PocketPC.

which color pda?

You're right Dalamar,

You are so right about the Clie. I didn't mention it mostly because it's not available as yet and I need a review or 10 to get over the hump of graffiti recog, battery life, readability, etc.
but I agree, it already sounds VERY tempting. We'll see.
My Vdlx does it all but I would sure like to upgrade to color, so I can't/won't even consider HandEra(dang it!)

m505- no, after the initial buzz, mostly disappointment.

PocketPC- well, even though I can now speak in 'windows', I always said
(in the middle of a crash, or driver conflict or yet another blue screen, or reboot again or just a feeling of shoddy product releases)
if I ever had a choice, I would not go with windows again. And I think, in this(handhelds), there is a viable choice. So, no thanks Bill, I hold a grudge.

I think you're right about the Sony Color(I'm a girl, and even I don't want to say Cleee-A), but I will try it next.

1-I even have a new wish app for it. I know it plays mp3's so it has a speaker, but can it do this? On my laptop, I have a prog called 'magic spell', very old and unsupported, but what is does is read back to you anything placed on your windows clipboard. This is so handy for reports, letters, and especially speeches. It really lets you hear the 'flow' of words, even though it has an awful old-fashioned electronic voice. This may not be revolutionary, but it's part of my tool bag.

2-I will also buy a Sony digicam IF when I place the memstick(everyone has to have their own kind) in the 'Sony Color', I can view the pics AND email them as attachments. No more laptop for offloading of full memory. Yahooooo!

3-how about a IR receiver with USB plug to put on any pc for printing requests from palm OS. Even, if just the docs2go, wordsmith, & quicksheet formats only.

Hey, I'm pretty good at this wishing stuff. Thanks for listening(reading).

Gina
I love/hate/love/hate/love my pc.
I hate my IIIc.
I love my Vdlx.

No crying involved. I really couldn't care less, since I've a bank of T1s here at work. I'm simply trying to make a suggestion to help the community here. One might even consider it 'compassionate conservatism' of other group members' resources (some people _are_ reading this via modem after all, and maybe even on their Visors). Of course, as one 'proudly led by Dubya', I'd have thought you'd understand that concept. Evidently not.

Wow. You've got Dubya's grammar down to a T. Led, indeed.

Posted by dalamar70 on 05-04-2001 02:19 AM:

According to Walter Mossberg, who reviewed the Clie for the Wall Street Journal, the Clie doesn't have a speaker... you should still be able to listen to stuff with headphones, although I don't know of any text-to-speech converter for PalmOS. (A couple of people were wondering whether the CardAccess Audible book module would have that ability, but apparently not.)
