-- Worst $10 spent - Tactilis flip clip (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10366)

Thumbs down

Worst $10 spent.

In my excitement, I just received my Tactilis flip clip last week and have been using it over the holidays. I ordered one because it sounded like it would be real cool. I tried to use it, but now a week later its going to stay off and here's why:

- the lid doesn't stay shut
- the lid doesn't stay open
- the lid sits off the Visor an 1/8th inch.
- the black clip that I got doesn't match the graphite color
- the clip doesn't sit right on top of the Visor
- the clip comes off easily

To say I'm only disappointed would be a compliment. When its in your hand the flip lid looks stupid on the Visor. My suggestion is to wait till they have their Visor specific cover and hopefully that'll fix all the lid problems. Also, get the clear clip, the black one looks bad.

Is there anyone else out there that feels the same or maybe I got a bad lid?

The current lid is a poor fit on the Visor... after all, it is a Palm III reproduction. Your "looks stupid" comment is probably attributed to the fact that it's a cover that is not designed specifically for the Visor. The upcoming Flip-Lid should be much more form-fitting and look better, too.

I can't say anything about the color mis-match. I reviewed a clear Flip-Clip on an Ice Visor (didn't have access to a Graphite Visor). Perhaps the clear would be a better option on the Graphite. You hardly notice it on the Ice one.

While the lid doesn't snap shut, the molded-in detents do hold it closed for the most part. You can shake it open, but (on mine anyway) it doesn't just fall open. As for not staying open, there are detents in the clip/cover at approximately 120 degrees where the cover should hold open. Again, sudden movements can cause it to close but you can adopt the hold-open-with-thumb technique as I did.

Make sure the hinge pins on the cover are properly inserted into the clip. I found that the poor fit of the lid would allow it to be pushed out of the hinge points without much effort

Can you be more specific about the clip not fitting properly on the Visor? Mine snaps on quite well. It sits flush to the casing all around. While it's certainly not a permanent attachment, it does take some doing to get it off.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Flip-Clip. I stated my dissatisfaction about the cover in my review and hope that the Flip-Lid will solve all the cover problems. I believe that the concept behind the Flip-Clip is great.

I would also agree that the Tactilis cover is a great design, albeit with some problems with the Palm III cover. However, it's a lot better than fumbling with two hands using the standard Visor cover. I'll be interested in seeing their design for the Visor cover, when they get it finished.

I'd also love to see Handspring buy Tactilis and integrate the design into future Visors. This is the sort of product that makes you ask "why didn't Handspring think of that?"

Unhappy

Dear schank,

I read your thread and was very sorry you were so disappointed with the lid and the clip.

When we started the development of this product, the palm III color pack seemed to be everywhere. It seems this is no longer the case. Fewer retailers have been carrying them since last year.

We ALSO were not 100% satisfied with the fit, which caused us to begin development on a new lid, while retaining the backwards compatibility with the III series accessories.

Because the clip was complete and working, we thought it better to offer it with the reproduction lid than alone. This is much better than leaving the customer to find a lid while we finish ours.

I'm concerned that you might have received a bad lid, since it is a product we do not produce, leaving the quality out of our control. We do try to look over all of them as closely as possible before shipping. Our Flip-Clip is built to the Palm III spec and you can feel a difference between an original palm lid and the ones we offer.

If you would like to try one of these we would be happy to inform you of where to buy one. We have a few on hand, if you would like us to send you one with a replacement clip (in Ice if you like, in case you are having any second thoughts on color choice).

I looked at your profile and didn't see any contact information, so send us an email with your order number so we can replace, refund or do whatever to make you happy.

Please contact us at [email protected]
or call (217) 222-4112

Yeah, Schank is right about the color of the clip. I opted for the "graphite" clip, but, wellll, it's actually quite a bit more glossy black than the more flat finish of the Visor. The rest of the combo works about like I expected. I'll tell ya, the translucent cover looks great, even if the fit and finish are less than optimal (but, again, we were supposed to expect that.) I expect -- I guess we all expect -- that the VS (Visor Specific) lids will be even better. But love that translucent graphite look. The customer service has been great! (I even received an assist right here on the boards). But, yeah, bummer about the clip's glossy look.

Thanks James. I'll send you an email with my info.

My thoughts on this post was to let people know what to expect when ordering a flip clip now and to see if mine was different from other peoples. A few weeks ago when I ordered there weren't as many images showing the fit and if I knew then what I know now, I would have definitely waited for the VS lid. Simply put, I don't think the flip combo is worth anything, even $10, until the VS lid is available. However, I'm sure when the new VS lid does come out then 'worst' will change to 'best'.

My problems with the clip fit is that left corner of the clip won't press down flat against the top of the Visor. Maybe all clips are like this and it is more apparent in the black? I will borrow my friend's camera and see if I can post an image of what I am talking about. Regarding the clip coming off, twice I put my Visor in my purse and both times when I took it out later the cover was coming off.

Talking

I realize that this is a public forum and a company interested in staying in business would always speak publicly in favor of the consumer, but WOW! Tactilis has once again shown what customer support means! I just hope my order is waiting for me when I return home on Friday :-)

It also shows the significance of VisorCentral. I've been on since November '99 and can't believe the wealth of information that's available here. This is simply the place to come for companies who want to truly support their products and deal with their most motivated customers!

BTW - your sig is right on!
