What the MiniJam should have been

I would not be interested in this -- with 128mb, or even 256mb cards, I wouldn't want to give up music space for file space. I would much rather just have two separate Springboards each doing one thing well than one complex springboard doing two things adequately. And, I wouldn't want to rely on my visor just for listening to music -- I've got more important jobs for it. And, when I'm on the bus, if I want to listen to music, I don't necessarily want to open up my holster to plug in cables, etc.

Huh?? That's why you have multiple cards for. All you would have to do would be swap CF cards and off you go. You wouldn't even have to swap modules. That's the whole point of it.

Ok. Let's say we add the processor that the MP3 player would need, because the 33mhz processor onboard cannot handle the playback of mp3's natively. Then, we add software on the flash memory of the card for the player program. Next, we add the earphone jack, control buttons for volume, FF, rewind, play, and pause. AND make it be able to use expansion cards. That would be a killer module!

That was my idea too and before buying a MemPlug CF, I was hoping to buy a MiniJam. But the fact that you can't store any other kind of data on the memory card was a deal killer for me. That and the fact that MMC memory is so expensive compared to CF. A hypothetical CF MP3 player would probably need only 1 slot. You can then pick how much you want to spend in additional memory, making it quite flexible on the user. On the low end you can spend as little as $19.00 for 32 Megs. At the high end, you can pay $375.00 for 512 Megs (prices taken from NewEgg.com.) The choice is yours.

Fare thee well,

Personally, I find it easier/simpler to swap modules than CF cards (with either the MemPlug, MBD, or FlashPlus). But, chaque a son gout, the lady said as she kissed the cow. (roughly, to each his own.)

Still, I'm not sure I see much benefit in an MP3 player module that also acted as storage. I'd rather buy the best CF module and the best MP3 player than settle for pretty good of each to have combined functionality. But, that's me.

On the other hand, I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to write some software to access the MMC cards in a MiniJam.
