I wonder if you some of you found the same thing about their Prism. I don't know why but everything looks to be running at the same speed. Even Avangto, which many people say that ir runs pretty fast.

I don't know if it is because I used the backup module to backup all my files into my Prism.

Any comments?

Al

There might be some hacks or something that might be affecting speed. Not likely though. But just for the hell of it, wipe your Prism and install it from scratch and see if it makes a difference.

I set up my Prism from scratch and it seems much faster than my VDX.

Actually, I tend to agree with acajigas. My Prism did not seem faster than the Deluxe. After installing QuickBits, I am happy with the Prism speed though.

How is quick bits affecting battery comsumption on your prism?

Also, just a comment on comparisons. Try comparing apples to apples. My sister has a IIIc and my Prism is definitely faster. I would imagine that color affects speed to a degree so comparing a VDX to a Prsim isn't quite a fair test.

Oh, one more thing, I installed the trial of Quick Bits. With all of the enhancements turned on, the test says that I've made a huge leap in performance, but it doesn't seem to be that much faster as having quickbits turned off.

Just a possible explanation regarding the fact that your Quick-bit enhanced prism may not seem to be faster... I have found that Quickbit seem to excel apps that require lot of "data-crunching" database type apps so if the main apps that you're running aren't that "complex", the difference might not be perceptible.

On a different note, other than Quickbit, I believe Afterburner hack will likely not help much since it only allow settings up to 32Mhz, which is still below the Prism/Platnium default speed.

Talking QuickBits Rocks..!

At first Quickbits may look to do nothing, but after you test it running different programas like City Time and other drawing programs. You will notice the difference. Also, you must be aware that Chrome slows the system because it changes the colors, and the OS takes more time to draw them.

The trick of turning it on and off to see the difference will not work. You have to compare your system when you have Qucikbits on. As the author of the programs says, some programs will improve more than others. THerefore, don't give up on the program if you see that it doesn't make any difference because it does.

The best thing is that it doesn't overclock your system, it just optimize performace and it is said on the manual that it also saves battery usage.

acajigas,

I'll do some more testing with quick bits and see if maybe I missed something.

I'm not running Chrome. Checked it out though. Didn't really appeal to me right now, so I deleted it from my Prism. I'm pretty happy with the standard color scheme.

Where did you find Quickbits? A search of PalmGear showed nothing...

Lightbulb Benchmark result using QuickBits

I have to admit that QuickBits really speeds up your system. I got a 246% result on my unit after I run the test on Benchmark.

I recommend this utility to friends..!

My prism gives 223% using benchmark... I don't have any hacks installed... it is noticeable faster, but I found that Zap! (or something) tends to slow down after a bit...

I get 250-260 on my Prism.

Posted by bioart on 11-25-2000 11:28 PM:

Did you do anything to the prism to get that score? are you running quickbits?

Uh, painting 65,000 colors WILL be slower than B/W or gray scale. My first impression upon seeing the Prism in person was, "gosh that seems slow".

I am running Quick Bits. My score is 258 with all options turned on.

This Handspring page says, in part:

quote:
Q. What applications will benefit from the faster processor?
A. Applications where a large number of records are accessed will benefit from a faster processor. For example, performing an address sort on a large database of addresses, performing a find in the Address Book with a large number of records, deleting an application, are all noticeably faster when performed on Visor Platinum than with a 16 or 20Mhz Palm OS handheld. Also, viewing an ActiveSky video, for example, results in more realistic full motion video. And for playing graphic intensive games, such as Zap!2000, Visor Platinum provides a more responsive and visually improved experience.

Is is possible those of you not seeing a speed difference are not doing tasks which benefit from the speed?

Overclock

If you download Clockup DA It has an option for Visor Prism/Platinum owners to overclock up to 42MHz. I personally like Clockup DA a lot because you can change the speed according to what your doing. (i.e. if you are using memopad, Throttle it back to 10 or something to preserve batteries, if you are running Zap 2016 then jack it up to 42 or if you are in Benchmark Run Quickbits AND Clockup at once, then show your friends your score You can download it here:

Have Fun!

Yes, You are right. The Prism flies when you use ClockupDA. I've seen a lot of difference in games like Froggy. If you play your alamrs they also go really fast. In fact everything goes faster. However, some important system functions are affected. Beam and the stowaway keyboard don't work using an overclock of 42Mhz. I wonder if we continue using it some hardware could be fried. What is the danger in using an overclock, anyone?

I've also seen how the batteries suffer from this overclocking.

Exclamation ******* WARNING ***** WARNING *******

******* WARNING ***** WARNING *******

I've found out in PalmGear that CLOCKUPDA could destroy your Prism:

18-Dec-00 by Bill S
This program just single-handedly DESTROYED MY NEW PRISM. I am not kidding, this is not a prank and I am not an amateur Palm user (owned three different PalmOS models not including this one and have been using these things for years). I installed an earlier version of DA Launcher and DID NOT activate it. When I tried to install the next version, it crashed my Prism. I tried to delete the offending file and it would not allow itself to be deleted. I now have a cycling, color-flashing crashing Prism that will not turn off that I now must return to Handspring for a replacement. Dangerous, unstable software like this should be REMOVED from PalmGear and I intend to send an email to them right now to that very effect. I didn't do anything to deserve a permanently ruined $450 PDA except try to run this garbage. DO NOT TRY THIS PRODUCT!!!

NOTE FROM PALMGEAR: THE DEVELPER HAS BEEN CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEM BILL EXPERIENCED. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT ON A VISOR PRISM OR PLATINUM UNTIL THE DEVELOPER HAS ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE!!!!
