November is almost upon us and I'm certain many of you are wondering
when the FlashAdapter application software will be available. So I
thought it would be wise to let everyone know where the development
stands and what to expect.

Work on the driver software and FAFileMover application is progressing
and we are doing everything we can to meet our goal of releasing the
software within the next several days. However, there is still a good
deal of work to be done, so we still can't promise an exact release
date. If all goes according to plan, we should have something ready to
release a week from today (Monday, November 6th). But as most people
know, things in the world of software development don't always go
according to plan. Should that date have to slip, I will announce it
here and be more than happy to field questions as to why.

Now, a few notes about what we are preparing to release are probably
in order. The initial FlashAdapter software release will consist of
two libraries (the ATA driver and the FAT filesystem driver) and the
FAFileMover application. We intend to have the libraries fully
functional and very stable for the first release. The FAFileMover
application will be stable, but will not have 100% of its planned
functionality implemented in the inital release. It will allow you to
copy a database from RAM to the root directory of the CF card and vice
versa but don't expect a highly polished user interface or a lot of
auxilliary functionality just yet.

The first software release will be Beta software. Beta software is
code that has proven stable in internal testing but may still have
significant defects that will be uncovered by more intensive end user
testing. If you are averse to software that may still contain
significant bugs, then this release should be avoided. The Beta will
be open to anyone that wishes to purchase the software. There will be
no compensation for using the Beta version other than the fact that
you may be able to use your FlashAdapter without waiting for the 1.0
release of the software (probably at least a month away). Since
upgrades are free for all registered users, anyone who purchases the
Beta software will be able to download all future updates at no cost.
And of course I will post a message to this list the moment the
FAFileMover beta is available for purchase.

I hope this answers any questions you may have. If not, I encourage
you to post your questions to the flashadapter-forum list rather than
emailing Kopsis directly. We monitor that forum as frequently as our
regular mail and posting questions and answers there helps out those
with similar questions and lets us spend more time on development and
less on email. As always, thanks for your patience and support!

Unfortunately, the TRGPro AutoCF software will not work with the FlashAdapter. Kopsis is working on our own FAAutoMover application that is intended to provide similar capabilites.

On a completely unrelated note ... Wow!! This thread is up to five pages! I never expected this kind of response . Let me just take a moment to say thanks to the folks at VisorCentral for letting us chew up their storage and bandwidth and thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm!

The Japanese CF adaptor has already been discussed. It's much more complex and apparently specialised just for this CF card.

Has anybody tried fitting one of the molex ejectors along with the short TDS adapter inside a module housing? I'm trying to figure out by how much the button will stick out of the top of the module.

Well we apear to rolling rather smoothly into the first week of november and I just thought I would ask if there is any software for the CF springboard module yet. I do not mean to heckle or harrass I am just curious because there has not really been any word in the last couple of days as to the progress of the much awaited module. I have built an improvised module using the sprinboard cover from my visor and a cf-2-pcmcia adapter and am anxiously awaiting the software to determine the viability of purchasing the shorter cf board and a proper springboard casing from some of the bulk orders going on. Has anyone heard anything new?

Well, there has been word, I've just been too busy to post much here. In a nutshell, software release is slipping by a couple weeks. You can get a much more detailed status from the flashadapter-info mailing list archive. The latest status report is here.

I'll post to VisorCentral when the software is released, but if you want to keep up to date on intermediate developments and periodic status reports, the best thing to do is subscribe to the flashadapter-info mailing list. The list is an announcement only forum and is the best source for FlashAdapter news.

Uh oh... shall we add another to the long list of vaporware? Does "a couple weeks" mean Summer '01?

Just kidding... I've been receiving my updates via the mailing list and must say I'm impressed with how forthcoming you've been about the whole situation. I can certainly appreciate wanting to release a product with as few bugs and as much functionality as possible (and I wouldn't want it any other way). You've taken the time to keep us informed (at least those that have subscribed to the mailing list) and that impresses me. If your software is only half as good as your customer service skills, it should be awesome.

Waiting with baited breath... and a couple of nice new CF cards!

I've received my short CF adapter that Tyler made for me. On my Prism, it passed all the tests that the CFCardInfo app from Kopsis does. Now all I need to do is wait for Dave Kessler to release the software so I can actually use it The short CF adapter only sticks out 5mm (or less than 3/8").

I followed Dave Kessler's excellent instructions exactly for testing the CF adapter. On my Prism, it did not jump to the Preferences app at all though. Dave said "When you plug in the card there should be short pause, then your Visor will jump to the Preferences app." Apart from the two references to the Preferences app starting, everything checked out.

I had purchased the "64MB Compact Flash Generic", which turned out to be a Princeton Technology PCF-64, from CoastMemory for only $118. This was less than a lot of 64MB CF memory on eBay.

The behavior you are seeing is correct. Handspring has changed the behavior of their OS modifications so that on 3.5.2, an unrecognized Springboard module does not cause a jump to the preferences app. I've verified this on the Prism and I suspect that the Platinum is same way (can anyone confirm?). I will eventually update the website to reflect this, but not until we can get some software out

I have found a 48MB Lexar Compact Flash card (Part#:S1093399
, Mfr#:CF048-235) for $37.99 after the $40 rebate.

I think it comes with a USB cradle that you can use to transfer files from your PC to the CF card.

I have never used Lexar CF cards...maybe someone over at rec.photo.digital has...

Likewise, I have never bought anything at computers4sure.

A couple notes about Lexar cards. A number of FlashAdapter users have reported compatibility problems with the smaller (4MB) Lexar cards. We've had no reports (good or bad) on larger capacity Lexar cards, but if you're buying one for use with a FlashAdpater, you might want to look into the vendor's return policy. If anyone has gotten a 32MB+ Lexar to pass the FlashAdapter CFCardInfo test, I'd love to hear about it.

As for Lexar's "JumpShot" USB reader, my understanding is that it works only with the new Lexar cards that have USB interface logic built into the CF+ card itself. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not something that Lexar states very clearly in their promotional material.

Great. I am awaiting my short module. What would I need to get the "raw" module to work? Would I need a card of some sort? If so, what kind of cards? Would I be able to run programs directly from the module (with a card)? Would I be able to download applications directly to module (with card) as the Lexar post suggests? What are some of the things I would be able to do with the module apart from the storage? How would is the module similar to/different from the HS Flash Module?

There is no software that will utilize these CF adapters yet. That is what Dave Kessler's company is working on. You can find all the info that you want here http://kopsisengineering.netfirms.c...hadapter_5.html

It sounds exceptionally promising. Maybe I should order a short cf adaptor from one of the people making them to replace the makeshift adaptor that I built.

Greetings FlashAdapter fans,

This is just a quick update on the status of our FlashAdapter software
development effort. I post these updates to the flashadapter-info list
since I assume that most of the people subscribed are waiting for news
of the FlashAdapter software release. And since we haven't released
yet, I feel you deserve to know what we've been doing with our time.
If you would rather not receive these updates, please email
kopsis_cf@y... and let us know. If more than a few people
complain, then I'll gladly move these reports to the
flashadapter-forum mailing list.

We spent a lot of time last week stress testing and squashing bugs in
the FlashAdapter driver software and I have to say that I'm quite
pleased with the result. We did have to spend some unplanned time
optimizing the software since the initial performance test results
were, to be completely honest, pathetic. I knew that some optimization
was going to be required but had planned to wait until after the beta
release. When I saw that it took over an hour to create 100 20KB files
on the CF card, I decided that couldn't wait. We've optimized that
down to a little over 6 minutes on a slow 4MB card, so I think you'll
agree it was time well spent. We should be able to improve that even
more, but further optimization will wait. The drivers are now fully
functional and are definitely ready for "beta".

Work on the FAFileMover application is progressing nicely. Since all
the "real" work is done in the drivers, FAFileMover is really just a
simple Palm application. I believe we are currently on track to be
able to release the "beta" early next week.

Hopefully next Monday's status report will bring good news! We're in
for another busy week ... wish us luck

Got it (after reading the warnings, of course ), installed it, tested it... works!!! Great job, Dave!!! I really like the potential of this... Can't wait for a more full-featured release.

Now, Dave... you're going to keep working on this right through the holiday weekend, right? (you can stop for, say, 10 minutes tomorrow to have a quick taste of turkey, but then get back to it!)
