Help name my new dog.

I am in the market for a new dog. I lost my 6 year old chocolate
Lab. last November. I had planned on my next dog to be a female Black lab. and I was going to name her Dolly.
Much to my suprise a MALE black lab. has becoms an option and I may be able to get him as early as next week.
So far my list of names consists of Maverick, Goose, Calvin, Thurman, Apollo(i have a cat named Rocky)Rufus, Rudy. I would love for you all to give me suggestions on what to name him.
I know we have a very creative bunch of people as members here so I cant wait to see what you come up with. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

well, based on the names you already mentioned, you and i have very different taste in dog names. however, i throw these out to you:

Dobbs
Fork
Senator (so when you see him when you awaken you can say "morning, Senator)
Taylor
Monkey
Fletcher
Mister
Clem

me all tiem favorite is "rex". I think that is like the coolest dog name ever.

Than theress edge, Pism, Ace, Columbia, deluxe.. I would probably choose Ace or columbia out of that list

I named my last dog Zack. My new dog is named Hans. Both are Doberman Pinschers. By the way, Mensachicken, I almost named mine Taylor as well. Get it: Zachary Taylor? Great minds think alike!

By the way, LTLBIGFOOT. I would recommend waiting until you actually get the dog before you name him. At that time, you will have had a chance to guage his personality, and name him something accordingly. My 4 month old doberman chews on every damn thing in sight, including my legs. I probably should have named him "Chewy".

I pray that his baby teeth will fall out soon so I can finally get some relief from the constant pain of sharp needles embedded in my skin.

Foo,

not to be presumptuous but what are you doing about his biting? you should be, every time he chews on something you don't want him to (your coffee table, your leg, etc.) be putting something in his mouth that you do want him to chew (toy, bone, etc.). this will help teach him what is his and what is not.

I give him an assortment of chew toys to play with, but somehow he prefers my right leg. As far as discipline goes, I use a stick to "reinforce" the word NO! It usually does the trick, now all I have to do is point to him with my finger extended and say NO, and he backs down instantly. He is terrified of the stick, and knows that when I whip it out..I mean business! For a pup he's actually very smart. In less than 3 hours today, I taught him to sit and shake hands. Even though he wants to obey me, he still has that "puppy instinct" to be mischievous.

But when you look into those little brown eyes, how can you get mad?

you mean you hit him with a stick? or used to?

there should never be a need to hit a dog in order to teach it something. your dog is doing nothing wrong, really, when he chews things... he's just not making the distinction between what is okay to chew and what is not.

by hitting or otherwise punishing him when he chews, you're telling him it's bad to chew. but it's not bad to chew. for dogs, especially puppies, it's necessary.

you need to get him something like a nylabone or a kong or something (don't know what you meant by "chew toys" so maybe you already have one of these items--it has to be something substantial (not a stuffed animal or squeaky toy)). then, when the dog chews something inappropriate, simply tell him no and then give him something to chew on that is okay, such as the nylabone. as soon as he starts chewing on it, praise him to the heavens. eventually, he'll leave your leg alone and stick with his own items.

he's probably teething (i don't know how old the dog is), but even if he's not, he needs to chew (to strengthen his jaw, clean his teeth, etc etc.).

think of his chewing like his peeing... it's not wrong. he just has to know when it's okay to do it.

as for training a dog--three hours is an awful long time, especially for a puppy. you should try and stick to 15 or 20 minutes, MAX. do this maybe once or twice a day and your dog will retain much more than he will over 3 hours.

my dog is 3.5 years old (http://www.alientomato.com/satch.jpg) and i "clicker trained" him (ie, no hitting or yelling, very little talking at all, actually) in 15 minute sessions every day.

he can sit, lie down, lie on his side (i say 'right side' or 'left side' and he goes the correct way), rollover, play dead, tap with his paw whatever i point at, touch whatever i point at with his mouth (for instance, i point at something and say "touch" if i want him to use his nose or "tap" if i want him to use his paw), shake hands, spin (chase his tail), heel, come, go (head off in the direction i point), stop (wait for me but don't come), stand (get up on all fours), turn thelights off and on ("lights"), go under or over whatever i point at (commands are under and over), stay (for up to 45 minutes or so, even with food two inches in front of him), leave it (walk away from whatever he's walking towards), take it (take whatever i want him to carry), and a few other tricks.

if you use clicker training, your dog's retention will be greater than traditional training (once he learns something, you rarely have to cover that ground again, regardless of how old the dog gets and when the last time you did the trick was).

Good Advice

The advice to get to know your new dog before you name him is right on the money. I have a mutt (yellow lab, shelty? mix). When we first got her, we named her Goldie (gold ears). She walked into walls a lot and is actually off-balance a bit (fits right in!). So... we call her Magoo a lot too. We should have waited and matched her name to her personality/quirks. Whatever you name your dog, enjoy. There is nothing like a dog to brighten your day

I will not be choosing a name until I get him I just want to have a wide range of choices to think about. I don't think I would name a dog senator, but I do think It would be funny to wake up in the morning and say "morning senator"

I tend to name most of my dogs real people names: Adam and Eve, Sam, Jeff, Oscar, Vincent and Didi. But I did have a dalmatian named Stripe for some quirky reason. My kids have named animals the typical kid names of Tiger, Blondie, Midnight, and Hopper. We had a turtle that my son named Hercules which I thought was very appropriate.

I like 'Morning Senator' a lot!

Here's a few to think about: Arnold, Henry, George, Caesar, Romeo.

i'm actually writing a screenplay and the hero has a dog named Senator. i just wish i thought of it before I named my dog, satchel.

I have had dogs named Edisto ("Eddie") and Saluda ("Sully") which are both South Carolina rivers.

That is absolutely correct. Always try to name your dog something with only one syllable. Example: my dogs name, "Hans" is one syllable. So don't name your dog something like "Henry the eighth"

i'm curious as to where you heard this advice. i've always heard the opposite: NEVER name your dog with a one syllable name; two syllables is best. the reason is that it is easier to distinguish from most commands, which are one syllable (down, sit, paw, stay, stand, etc.)

I'll have to find the name of the book...it's a "classic" and features the authors' grand-daughter (Gretchen) and her black lab puppy (Tar). The author wrote several books but I can't think of name right now.
