I don't have any inside info on PalmOS 5 so this is pure speculation, but my gut feeling is that anyone expecting OS 5 to be "Be-ish" is going to be very disappointed. They may give it a BeOS "look and feel" but I think under the surface it's going to be the same old fashioned PalmOS C API.

BeOS was designed from the ground up to have an object oriented C++ API and a very elegant application framework. That would be a radical departure from what Palm has now. I really can't see Palm switching from Dragonball to ARM, from the AMX kernel to their own multi-tasking/multi-threading kernel, and from the existing APIs to a new OO API all in one fell swoop.

I do suspect that Palm will try to incorporate more Be technology into the OS as time goes on, but they've only owned Be for a short time so I wouldn't expect to see any of that until sometime after the release of PalmOS 5.

I was expecting this also. But according to Ted Ladd (Palm PR man), OS 5 will look like OS 4.

I thought a main motivation for the purchase of Be was the lack of anything WRT OS 5. I guess it's easier to re-release the same thing with some cool looking tweaks. If it works so well for MS...

Well, Palm's official position on the aquisition has always been that what they really wanted was Be's infrastructure for supporting OS licensees. They've also said that the engineers that they got were "priceless" - but never once have they indicated that the BeOS technology itself has any value to them. Sad but true.

Let's face it, Palm has a less than stellar track record for capitalizing on aquired technology. Look what happened with MultiMail. There's a product that had huge potential (as well as room for improvement) but since its aquisition by Palm has been totally stagnant.

Perhaps the spinoff of the OS division will give the software folks enough freedom to go off and create so really cool stuff - but I'm not going to hold my breath.
