Smile Something Bitchen This Way Comes

I just went to the Siggraph show this week, and they had something hella cool there. Spread out around the registration area and show floor were these stands that beamed the show schedule, exhibit maps, and other info into your palm compatable. (IVDLX, in my case.) It was soooo cool to have the info much more readily accessable than in a fold-out map or book.

They had similar set-ups to this at a different trade show in Vegas earlier in the year, but that was accomplished through a cradle. We were all nervous about syncing our palms on a strange machine. This IR station is the bomb, though. I would love to see something like this for transit maps and schedules, or museum guides.

In what format was the data dispensed from these stands? Was it a pdb or an app itself?

Sounds cool. I long for the day when this type of thing is common place. The possibilities are endless although I think that day is far off.

Here is a program along those lines. You install it on your Palm and setup the app to beam data continously. I would think it would kill batteries real quick but it's very similar to what you mentioned.

Beaming stations would probably be the best way to accomplish this:

I believe that the price of each WideRay is $100, but there
might be a service fee as well.

Verizon did something like that recently in NYC at Times Square.

Wow, Sledgehammer -- I thought I was the only person in North America who remembered that show...

"Dark's Pandemonium Carnival" still gives me the chills, and I always have to set up a lightning rod when I move to a new house.

It was a .prc that was beamed automatically when I set my visor down on the table, pointed at the machine. Once inside the visor, I double clicked on the install icon and it uncompressed itself.

Yeah, I can't wait until I can get a mallmenac beamed to me to find a store, or exhibit listings or fairground maps and such. It will be cool.

BTW, the company that made this is called nearspace.
