Actually, the Chinese government has officially made the usual expression of sympathy and solidarity. As I hear it, some of the press over there is a little more mixed - that it was bad, but perhaps attributable to American arrogance, etc. Rather like what you've been saying dietrich.

I should have looked harder, most of my news sources have been network television, they're pretty focused on the western world right now, Asia's not in their current focus. I figured that the BBC would at least tell me someting about China...

...Man... Attributing it to American arrogance... it's like every time I try to even imagine the scope of what they did, everything else just falls away....

A news source I read yesterday (sorry, can't recall which one mind numbed from all info i am trying to absorb) also attributed some comments to the Chinese government along the lines of they are frightened for Chinese citizens in the United States...if I am horribly botching this, please forgive me I am trying to remember it...

Post Armageddon

Hi All,
Could this plot to ram some commercial aircraft into the World Trade Center be motivated by the movie, "Armageddon". The first few minutes of this movie shows the comets damaging several buildings plus the WTC in NYC? I believe this movie give them a good idea for a target to be carry out against the USA.

Regards,
Byron

This wasn't the first time the WTC was a target for a _real_ bombing, so I doubt if Armageddon had anything to do with it.

Arrow Why

I think the previous poster is onto something. I do believe that U.S Foreign Policy is to blame for this whole fiasco. I think the U.S tend to throw its weight around too much...and its always "Their way or the highway".

To lay blame in any way, shape, or form on our country's policies is sickening. American foreign policy is guilty of nothing more then looking out for America. There will always be groups filled with rage and jealousy for all that we have and they do not. We should not cater to their ignorance or empty rage by changing our policies to appease them. Appeasement never works.

Hi again,
Yes, I believe these individuals who hi-jack those airplanes wanted to use them in place of a comet against the U.S.A..
If our military go after these guys or someone to blame; I request this mission be call - "Operation Comet".

Byron

Doubt it. If it was Bin Laden, he's been eying the WTC for a long time. Remember the WTC bombing in '93?

We all know that VisorCentral members are good at getting things done, but, gee, do you really expect US to affect the naming of the mission!

I'd take "Operation Eat-My-Shorts"...

Hey, not making light of the situation, just thought we could all use a laugh.

Hi All,
Yes, I believe if any military action is taking against these guys; it should be call - "Operation Comet". Because like a comet, America need to hit this enemy / threat real hard and dead on.

More on nukes: I said last week,

"I say this after a lot of deliberation and after consideration of the consequences: Assuming bin Laden's group was behind this, I think we ought to use tactical nuclear weapons on all terrorist bases used by bin Laden."

And today I read this from a Japaneese newspaper:

"WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The Defense Department has recommended to President George W. Bush the use of tactical nuclear weapons as a military option to retaliate for last week's terrorist attacks in the United States, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.
It is unknown whether Bush has made any decision. Military analysts said the president is unlikely to opt for the use of nuclear weapons because doing so would generate a backlash from the international community and could even trigger revenge from the enemy involving weapons of mass destruction.

"However, the Pentagon's suggestion shows the determination of U.S. officials to retaliate for the first massive terrorist attacks on the U.S. mainland, the analysts said.

"The recommendation appears intended to deter terrorists, they said."

Hmmm, I'm now thinking like the defense department. Is that good or bad? :-)

Depends. . . Have you had an overwhelming desire to go buy a $700 toilet seat from HomeDepot?

Sorry, but my President said get back to normal, and I'm normally a Sarcastic Smart A*&

I don't think we'll use nukes. Right now he doesn't even want to use cruise missiles for fear of the PETA back lash for hitting a camel in the butt!

Using Nukes? How stupid are we? Isn't restraint a noble attribute to have?

These people have nukes, too. We all know that anything close to a nuclear war signifies the beginning of the end of this planet.

Blowing up the planet. Good idea. I guess that WILL get rid of the terrorists.

Homer:

Relax. We aren't going to use nukes. I don't know where that report came from, but I'm sure we aren't going to nuke anyone.

One caveat - if someone successfully used their own weapons of mass destruction first - most likely chemical or biological weapons (successfully defined here as causing deaths on a massive scale equally or exceeding what happened last week), well then all bets are off.

Also, you say "these people have nukes too." What people are you referring to? The Pakistanis have them, but right now they are in our corner (at least the government is). Even if they weren't they don't have the means of delivering them to the U.S. - their missles and planes are short-range, suitable for hitting India but not the U.S.

Bin Laden and company don't have nukes. If they did, they'd have used them by now.
