Same old Backup Module question

I know this has been asked a million times already, but since the search function is now worthless with the four character word limit, I'll have to ask it again.

Does the Backup module restore your Visor EXACTLY to the way it was before?

I have been using Backup All, but it only works halfway, and recently failed me. I have never tried backup buddy, so is there something that will restore my Visor to EXACTLY the way it was. I mean how hard can it be to copy the contents of the memory bit for bit and restore it exactly.

Thanks,

Justin

I see it everywhere for $40. I have a $5 off $25 coupon for Staples so I could get it for $35. Cheaper anywhere else?

I have the Backup Module and absolutely love it. Each time I have used it, it has been flawless. Restored everything PERFECT.

As for price, I got mine at Staples when they had them onsale. Got mine for $24.95. If you can get it for $35.00, that is not too bad. I would definately suggest purchasing one, even if you have to pay full price.

Does MemPlug's PiBackup not do a full restore much like the Handspring Backup Module does?

Any clarification would help!

It's the same...old song...just a different meaning since you've been gone....

Anyway, PiBackup should be the same, but I've never tried it.

Ditto, with the exception that Commander Lite (Palm Lock-out security software) has to have the password restored and needs to be re-enabled. Actually, that's probably a good thing -- it means that the password is NEVER hotsynced or backed up, which means no one can get at it except via the Palm dialogs (which are secure).

But, big thumbs up on the backup module, too.

Thanks Thunderbird...

Has anyone here tried using the PiBackup? Was it successful? I've heard things about having to re-register the software as it doesn't recognize the username, etc...

Can anyone confirm?

Namja,
I just sold one for $30 on ebay, and that seems to be the going rate. With no moving parts, I don't see much risk in buying one of these used. (I actually may have another to sell if I dig it up. Let me know if you want it.)

I did a full restore from my piBackup. Nothing but '#8017 cannot find file size' errors and reset loop of death & frustration.

I did write to memplug, haven't heard back yet, will post though.

Because I know better, I own a HS backup mod. It came to my rescue, AGAIN.

Still, I'm *very* dissapointed with piBackup, a HUGE part of my purchasing decision. I don't know why it failed or if the original backup was not correct(how about a msgbox here?)

But with the HS b/u mod, no choices, no problems. 2 buttons - backup, restore. That's it.

HS b/u mod WORKS! WORKS! WORKS!

Memplug piBackup hasn't worked yet! Geez!

I have used PiBackup a couple of time with no problems. Everything was back as it was before.

$30 seems like a high price, but then it IS eBay where too often people bid way higher than they should. If I get it, I'll probably get it at Staples. I can use my $5 off $25 and get the Backup Module for $35, or maybe I'll also buy other items to push the total to above $50 and use my $10 off $50.

Anyway, thanks for the offer.

You had no problem at all! Did you have AvantGo restore problem-free? I've heard issues around this as well.

I do not use AvantGo, so I do not know about a problem with it.

I have had a problem with corrupted Address DBs after performing PiBackup and PiMover operations. I have not noticed any problems with other files. Using BackupBuddy, a USB reader/writer, and numerous backup/restore operations, I have noticed the following:

1. The problem occurs when the file is moved from RAM to the smartmedia. If I copy the file from the PC to the smartmedia using the USB adapter, then from the smartmedia to Visor memory, the DB is good. Copying the file from RAM to smartmedia and back to RAM results in a corrupted DB.

2. The problem occurs on the 8177/8178 record boundary. 8177 records or less do not have corrupted DBs following backup/restore. But a DB with 8178 records or more gets corrupted during this sequence. I have one private record and am not sure if/how this affects this boundary.

3. I don't think this is related to other applications on my Visor. I have performed a hard reset of the Visor then installed the file using the USB adapter and a move from smartmedia to RAM. The file was good. Then subsequent mover or backup/restore operations (with no other applications loaded) resulted in a corrupted DB.

4. I have not had this problem with my HandSpring backup module.

The Address list is visibly corrupted when the application is first entered. If any record is tapped on, a fatal exception occurs. No hard reset is required to recover from this.

PI was very responsive when I first brought up this problem, but apparently were not able to duplicate the problem. They did request my DB to help in duplicating the problem, but I did not provide it since it has proprietary information from my Employer. Maybe someone else with large databases has seen this problem and can provide a sample DB to PI.

I have been very satisfied with my adapter and have a workaround for this problem, but I wanted people aware of this problem since I have seen other posts stating how reliable the PiBackup and PiMover applications are. Those with large Address DBs might want to run a few tests to reassure themselves their backup works fine for them.

update

There's a $10 off $40 coupon that you can print and take to Staples B&M here:

http://hotcoupons.freeservers.com/

With that, you can get the Backup SpringBoard Module for $30.

Enjoy.
