-- Edge Hard Reset... (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=21272)

The t415 requires you to have the backlight on in all but the best conditions... get the 360 or save up for the 615.

It's the static electricity. I'm convinced of it at this point.

What?! Are you guys serious???

Can you guys please explain? I don't understand what static electricity can cause a hard reset to the Palm.

Cheers,
Andre.

I certainly don't think it was the lint...

As for static and the module, I'm skeptical. I can see static shock going from the grounded cradle to the ungrounded Edge, but from the Edge (in one hand) to the module (in the other)? Seems far fetched...

Then again, easy for me to say, I'm not the one with the hard resets, or the Edge.

...you know, I had a dream last night that I took the edge apart and found some problem, fixed it, and was very happy. I woke up and missed my old blue wonder.

Yes.

It's an electronic device. All of the buttons that you press operate by bridging two contacts together. The static electricity may be bridging the gap, so to speak. Not to mention that the contents of RAM are only kept there because the device refreshes the charge that keeps it there from time to time. Let's say that a static charge corrupts part of this storage and causes one of your programs to read some invalid data. The device might hang, reset, hard reset, whatever. Since the Edge has a metal case, it's probably more susceptible to this. Static from Palm Vxs has been documented to fry poorly protected serial circuits on computers before, so it's quite feasible that all of the 'QC' problems on the Edge are due to static electricity.

I don't know if everyone knows this, but when a soft reset doesn't work there is a system reset. To perform this you hold in the up scroll button as the visor is resetting. I've used this plenty of times when my edge hangs on the palm restart screen, and it works 90% of the time. If that doesn't work, then you have to resort to a hard reset.

Hmmm, thanks for all those notes...stupid static electricity...lol. I got shocked today like 3 times by the car door.. . Anyway, my edge is falling apart...it's not even funny. It's hard reset 3 times, lost a screw, the buttons are tarnishing, I have a sratch on the casing, and the power button is losing its tactile feedback. I'm disappointed in Handspring...if this thing hard resets one more time, I'm back off to Sony .

Thanks for the system reset tip, I'll remember that if it ever happens...

Just ditch. Lord, I miss the edge. If it were not so finicky, I'd trade my prism for it. No kidding--in a heartbeat.

Yep, this is a great, great trick. it's known as a warm reset. The only thing to keep in mind is you should do a soft reset (standard reset pin push, no buttons) afterwards, once things stabilize. A warm reset leaves the visor in a odd mode akin to the Windows "safe mode." it takes up more power and may make things smarpy.

This thing is so cool, I wish the same, dunno why it has so many problems. Problem is, I don't have much cash. I'll see how this thing goes in the next week. If it does well, she'll stay. Otherwise, I'll see if I can get a Sony T415...it's pretty niice...

I dunno, man. If you can work up the scratch for a t415, I would wait a little longer and get the t615. You will not be happy with teh t415's screen with daily use. If you can't get the t615, I would just get the s360 and save some money, too.

Yea, I think that's probably the best. I was considering the S360, but the form factor and aesthetics ain't as good as the Edge or T415...oh well. I'll see
