OS X Desktop 4.0 released
Let the conduit onslaught begin! Palm releases the final version of its Palm Desktop 4.0 for Mac OS X.

WARNING!!
I just installed 4.0, restarted and got my first OSX crash.
My mac (G4 tower, 433) chimes, then I get the gray startup screen with the happy mac icon (as usual). As the harddrive spins, I usually see a small, spinning, colorful CD (as my mouse arrow), then the system boots up normally.
Now no CD/mouse arrow, and I get text (starting at the top), with a bunch of UNIX jargon explaining - from what I can tell - that my kernel is bad. The text fills most of my screen, then ends with something like "We are in panic here ..." No kidding.
FWIW, all I did was run the installer and reboot. That's it.
Thank God and the Mac guru I have OSX on a seperate partition. When I find a solution, I'll post here. Any help would be much appreciated.
And install Palm Desktop 4.0 at your own risk!!!

Ah. A good-ol Kernel panic. Arugably a lot more freaky than the Blue Screen of death.
Tangental to this thread, has anyone found a good desktop replacement? Anyone using Eudora for OSX and syncing with Palm? How about Enterouge...will that be a better replacement once they get a conduit?

New Mac desktop
I installed the new Mac desktop 4.0 and everything seemed to be going fine, but after a HotSync I got a message on my Visor that Installer 3.5.3 was "not compatible with this device". Then I found on Handspring's Web site that the new desktop is not yet certified for use with Handspring models! I wish the folks at VisorCentral had let us know this before posting the annoucement. I've had some weirdness installing some new software on my Visor as well, so maybe this is the reason. No crashes or anything though (yet).
After deleting 3.5.3 (thanks) the synch worked without error. But it only synch'd the 4 primary applications - notes could be added or deleted and synch'd. It didn't back up any other applications.
The beta seemed to do everything that the old version on mac os9 did with the exception of avant go.
will watch site for more on handspring - OSX related updates.
any word on avantgo updates? They seem unwilling to respond to my questions.
OS X Desktop 4.0
I followed the tip for deleting the folder for 3.5.3 and attempted a 'sync'. I got a crash when it attempted to synchronize my datebook+. Afterwords I checked the log to see what did work and saw:
OK install
OK to do list
OK Memo Pad
I'd appreciate any tips from people who may have gotten this desktop
to work with a Handspring Visor Edge. I had no problems with the Palm beta version for OS X
Desktop 4.0 and FAX coversheet
I just tried to get the cover sheet to show my info in the header, but it keeps changing it back to field names (i.e. name, title, etc."
Anyone found a solution for this?
Where's the Instant Desktop dock icon?
Just like in the beta, there's no sign of the instant palm desktop dock icon.
Sure, if I have the main desktop app running, I can get information via the dock icon. But quit the desktop, and the icon goes away. Even if I keep it in the dock, I don't get any more than the standard 'show in finder' option.
The check box in prefs doesn't do anything - except tell me changes will take effect at restart. Which they don't.
Am I missing something here? In OS X, do you have to have the full app running to make the dock icon do anything meaningful? If so, it's pretty pointless, isn't it? I may as well just look in the app...
Or maybe there's something odd on my system.. if anyone else has a clue - like where does the instant palm desktop live? where are its prefs stored? how is it started up? Maybe some of that information will get it working, if it's not the pointless thing it appears to be on OS X; used to work a treat on OS 9, and I'd like that functionality back.
Nigel.
