-- How to add a mac to an existing windows network? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15629)

Posted by dick-richardson on 06-02-2001 06:55 AM:

The title says it all. We have a 15 or so computer network at work and we want to add a mac to it (with file sharing, IP sharing, the whole works). My boss is getting the mac at my behest. It's a used PowerMac G4 (not that it makes a difference, just thought I'd sate potential curiosity).

As an aside, how in the hell do (did?) people put up with those round mice? The thing is driving me insane!

It should be fairly easy to do this. After you plug the mac into the network you need to goto Apple->Control Panels->TCP/IP and correctly configure those settings. I don't have a mac so I can't gaurantee that that will work but am almost positive that it will.

In terms of the round mice have your boss go buy the pro keyboard and pro mouse so it is an oliptical mouse. The pro mouse is really nice, we have them at school, and I would buy one for my pc if they would work with them.

You need to get additional software if you want complete file and printer sharing. There is PCMaclan and Dave. Both are not cheap, but do make your Mac (or PC on an Appletalk network) appear. I don't remember which one is best if you are integrating one Mac into a PC Network (I think it is Dave but can be wrong). For my small home network with one PC and three Mac's I use Virtual PC for the occasional filesharing and have the printer simultaneously connected to one Mac and the PC, so that I don't need the printer sharing. I don't recommend that for an office set-up.
I have heard the same complaints about that mouse, I recommend that you get one of the new mice Apple makes. I've got one on a Cube which is fine.

Wasn't there some talk about various Mac - PC network solutions in an old thread? I'll go see if I can dig it up.

Found it:

I've got the optical mouse, but that round one at work is enough to drive me batty. I've stooped to taking my own mouse to work (is it too late to seek counseling?).

Thanks all. Looks like it's going to be either Dave or VPC.

Two options:

1: pop-off the colored 'side panels' so the mouse is no longer round.

2: throw it away and get a decent mouse like the Microsoft Intellimouse.

PCMaclan is for connecting a PC to an Appletalk network (and owns the dubious award in my book of having the 'trippiest' start-up splash screen I've EVER seen.)

Setting up your TCP/IP does nothing more than connect you to the internet and/or allows you to connect to an Appletalk network over TCP/IP

If your firm is running an NT server, you can set Appletalk up on that to connect to the server.

Otherwise, your best bet is Dave: http://www.thursby.com/default.html

Virtual PC works, but it is a pain to have that running just to enable file sharing.

Dick,

What version of Windows are you running?

Are you networked with NT servers, or just peer-to-peer (all desktops, no servers)?

Have you tried the MS web site?

If not, you can search of Apple, Macintosh or G4 (or other combinations) to see if you can find anything to help.

Also, if you provide the answers to my questions, I'll see what I can find in TechNet for you.

You can email me at: [email protected]

Thanks all. To answer some questions.

1. all machines are Win 95, 98, or Me
2. it's a peer to peer network
3. I've checked around the net a bit, but the answers I found were much too convoluted and/or had nothing to do with my query, so I came here.
4. My employer is leaning toward VPC (it's slightly cheaper and he's more or less mac illiterate).

Three options, really.
MacSense (whose website is apparently currently offline) has a mouse adapter called the "iCatch". it runs about $10 shipped (depending on where you get it) and turns the puck into an ergonomically sound device.
It's also cheaper than a replacement.

I assume you mean "a decent mouse" in the sense of any other mouse, and are not specifically endorsing that product (there are better mice for the Mac).
